AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects.

The Onboarding and Connections Group manages AEMO’s end to end process for connecting and registering generators into the National Electricity Market.

As a Senior Engineer, Onboarding & Connections, you'll play a key role in Australia's energy transition, helping connect more than 160GW of new generation over the next 30 years, including wind, solar, hydro, battery storage, and hydrogen projects.

Working with developers, network service providers, equipment manufacturers, regulators, and government stakeholders, you will:

  • Deliver power system modelling and assess system performance and connection requirements.
  • Solve generator modelling and power system challenges with industry partners.
  • Collaborate across AEMO to support the connection of new generation projects.
  • Translate complex technical issues into practical insights for stakeholders.

You'll build strong industry relationships, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to industry forums and working groups while helping shape Australia's future energy system.

Reporting to the Team Lead Connections Engineering this role can be based in any AEMO office location and offers flexible working arrangements supported by a collaborative and connected team culture.

These are newly created roles supporting a growing pipeline of generation projects across Victoria. Reporting to a supportive and empowering leader, you'll join a collaborative team that values knowledge sharing, teamwork, and continuous learning. You'll have the autonomy to lead your work while being backed by experienced colleagues who are invested in your success.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Assess and negotiate generator performance standards and support commissioning activities with Network Service Providers (NSPs), developers, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Perform power system studies and simulations to assess grid connection requirements for new generation projects.
  • Evaluate generator models, reactive power plants, and control systems.
  • Interpret technical analysis and provide clear, evidence-based recommendations on performance requirements.
  • Communicate complex technical issues effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Improve analysis tools and methods, manage competing priorities across multiple projects, and build trusted relationships across the energy industry.

What You Will Bring To The Role

Education

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Proven experience leading or contributing to complex technical projects in a power systems environment.
  • Experience managing generator connections and assessing generator and power system performance issues.
  • Strong understanding of technical negotiations and the commercial drivers underpinning energy infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of the National Electricity Market (NEM), generator behaviour, dispatch processes, and network constraints.
  • Ability to translate complex engineering concepts into clear, practical insights for diverse stakeholders.
