The Opportunity

We have an opportunity within our Finance Department for an Assistant Management Accountant to join the Management Accounting team. Reporting to the Coordinator Management Accounting, you will support the preparation of budgets, forecasts, management reports and general ledger journals, while helping administer the BIS budget system and other financial registers and processes.

In this role, you will provide practical guidance and support to service managers on commitment management, budget variance analysis, commentary and forecasting. You will also assist with system administration, reporting templates, work order structures and continuous improvement activities across management accounting processes. The ideal candidate will be accurate, curious and collaborative, with strong attention to detail and the ability to build trusted working relationships across Council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and enter service budgets, including salaries, fees and charges, into Council's budgeting system.
  • Assist with the annual budget, quarterly forecasts, labour budgets, fees and charges, four-year budget, 10-year financial plan and revenue and rating plan processes.
  • Support the maintenance and continuous improvement of financial systems, including tables, templates, hierarchies, system structures, upgrades, interfaces and reporting tools.
  • Support service managers with management reporting, budget queries, forecasting and variance analysis.
  • Assist with procedures and systems that support asset accounting, capital reporting and compliance with relevant accounting standards and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Create and maintain work orders and tasks for capital and improvement works projects, including alignment to asset classifications and capital expenditure types.
  • Prepare general ledger journals and assist with checking the accuracy of journals posted to the general ledger.
  • Provide BIS administration and end-user support, including user access, views, reconciliations and training.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will have the following:

  • A tertiary qualification in Accounting, with eligibility for associate membership of CA or CPA Australia, or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • Experience working within a Finance function in a medium to large organisation or within a Local Government environment.
  • Knowledge of accounting standards, accounting procedures and practices, particularly in relation to asset accounting, capital reporting and project delivery reporting.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and confidence using financial systems, reporting tools and Microsoft Office applications.
  • The ability to analyse financial information, review budget variances and prepare clear written commentary and reports.
  • Well-developed communication skills, with the ability to support service managers and build effective working relationships across the organisation.
  • Satisfactory completion of required pre-employment checks, including a police check.
