Backend (Integration) Developer

As we continue to grow, we're looking to welcome an experienced Developer to our Melbourne team on a 12-month contract (multiple roles available). This is a great opportunity to join an innovative technology company building products that make a real difference for businesses and communities.

In this role, you'll focus on backend engineering, API design, and complex system integrations. You'll design, build, and maintain robust integration solutions across our platform ecosystem, ensuring our services are scalable, secure, and reliable.

You'll play a key role in connecting internal systems, third-party platforms, and cloud services, while maintaining strong standards around performance, governance, and security.

What You'll Be Doing…

• Designing and building scalable backend services using Node.js and NestJS.
• Developing and maintaining RESTful APIs, webhooks, and event-driven integrations.
• Designing and implementing integrations with third-party systems, SaaS platforms, and enterprise applications within a multi-tenant SaaS environment.
• Building middleware and microservices to support data transformation, orchestration, and system communication.
• Ensuring data integrity, consistency, and performance across distributed systems.
• Defining API standards, authentication approaches, and integration governance patterns.
• Implementing secure integration methods such as OAuth2 flows, JWT, API keys, and rate limiting.
• Investigating and resolving complex integration issues across multiple environments.
• Leading root-cause analysis for production incidents involving integrations or backend services.
• Creating clear documentation for APIs, integration patterns, and service contracts.
• Collaborating with product engineering squads to align on integration strategy and implementation.
• Contributing to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and deployment processes for backend services.
• Supporting and mentoring developers on backend best practices, integration patterns, and scalable architecture

Your Talents…

• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and NestJS in production environments.
• Proven ability to design and implement complex system integrations.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, event-driven architecture, and asynchronous processing.
• Experience working with messaging systems (e.g. SQS or similar event brokers).
• Solid knowledge of authentication and authorisation frameworks (OAuth2, JWT, etc.).
• Experience integrating with external APIs and enterprise systems such as ERP, CRM, and identity providers.
• Strong database experience (e.g. PostgreSQL, document databases, MongoDB), including schema design and optimisation.
• Familiarity with multi-tenant microservices architecture and distributed system design patterns.
• Experience working in cloud environments (e.g. AWS, ServiceNow).
• Strong capability in debugging, monitoring, and performance tuning.
• Experience with containerisation and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ability to think in systems, with an understanding of upstream and downstream impacts and data flow dependencies.
• Strong documentation practices and a governance-focused mindset.
• Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to influence architectural decisions.
