Project Officer, TAS Operations

Australian Electoral Commission

Agency Purpose

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The AEC’s values and commitments

The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.

The Team

You will join our Launceston office team, supporting the divisions of Bass and Lyons. We are a collaborative and high-performing team that values quality outcomes, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to delivering Australia’s democratic processes.

You will also work closely with colleagues in Hobart and Burnie, building strong connections and regularly sharing knowledge and best practices. In addition, you will be part of a national network of Project Officers.

The team typically consists of 5–10 staff but expands significantly during electoral events. During these periods, we scale up by engaging a temporary workforce and working with people from a wide range of backgrounds, skills, and experiences.

At the AEC, you will build meaningful professional relationships and be supported by strong networks as we work together to deliver an impartial and independent electoral system with integrity.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an adaptable and proactive individual to support the delivery of operational projects with multiple moving parts. This work is critical to providing high-quality electoral services to eligible electors and offers a unique combination of challenge and reward. During business-as-usual periods, you will focus on election planning and associated administrative responsibilities, playing a vital role in maintaining electoral readiness and integrity.

As a Project Officer with the AEC, you will contribute to the planning and delivery of key activities required to conduct elections and referendums within your divisions. During electoral event periods, you will take on increased responsibility, leading the delivery of larger or higher-risk projects within tight timeframes while managing competing priorities. You will also lead and support small to medium-sized teams, providing guidance, training, and coaching to enable the successful delivery of planned activities.

The role involves engaging directly with members of the public by supporting frontline services, including responding to enquiries and assisting with electoral enrolment. In addition, you will process more complex enrolment applications and undertake a range of tasks that contribute to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the electoral roll.

Working under the general direction of senior staff, you will manage more complex work, organise your own priorities, and make decisions within established parameters. You will also play an important role in fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture through leadership, collaboration, and mentoring.

The role offers a variety of opportunities for professional growth and development, along with potential progression to more senior positions where appropriate.
