About the role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Data Architect to lead the development and implementation of an enterprise-wide data capability within a large and complex government environment.

This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for shaping the organisation’s data architecture strategy, driving data governance, and enabling data-driven decision-making through modern, scalable and integrated data solutions. You will play a key role in establishing a centralised data capability that brings together architecture, governance, engineering and business intelligence functions to deliver strategic outcomes across the organisation.

Working closely with business and ICT stakeholders, you will define target-state architecture, establish governance frameworks, and ensure data is managed as a strategic asset to support operational excellence and future growth.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the development and maintenance of enterprise data architecture aligned with organisational strategy and government frameworks.
  • Engage with business stakeholders to understand data requirements, business capabilities and operational processes.
  • Design and maintain current-state and target-state data architectures, data models, standards and principles.
  • Establish and support enterprise data platforms leveraging Microsoft Azure and modern business intelligence technologies.
  • Define and implement data governance frameworks, including data quality, stewardship, privacy and security standards.
  • Coordinate enterprise-wide data demand and promote the adoption of shared solutions to minimise duplication and improve efficiency.
  • Develop high-level solution designs and requirements to support the delivery of strategic data initiatives.
  • Provide technical assurance and architectural oversight across data projects and technology implementations.
  • Collaborate with ICT teams, vendors and delivery partners to ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture principles.
  • Prepare architecture documentation, standards and handover materials to support ongoing operational support and sustainability.
  • Lead capability uplift initiatives through mentoring, coaching and promoting best-practice data management and analytics approaches.
  • Represent data architecture interests in governance forums and provide expert advice to senior stakeholders.

Highly desirable criteria

  • Demonstrated experience in a Principal Data Architect, Enterprise Data Architect or similar senior data leadership role within a complex environment.
  • Strong expertise across Microsoft Azure data services, SQL, ETL processes, Power BI, Dynamics 365 and ArcGIS.
  • Proven experience designing enterprise-scale data architectures and data integration solutions.
  • Extensive knowledge of data governance, data quality, metadata management, privacy and security frameworks.
  • Strong business and data modelling capabilities with the ability to align technical solutions to strategic business outcomes.
  • Experience establishing enterprise data platforms and modern analytics capabilities.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to work across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in mentoring teams and driving organisational capability uplift.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Management or a related discipline.
  • Industry certifications such as Microsoft Azure, TOGAF or equivalent architecture certifications.
  • Experience working within Queensland Government or other large public sector environments.
  • Knowledge of government ICT strategies, standards and governance frameworks.
  • Experience facilitating data and analytics communities of practice or capability development initiatives.
