About APCO

The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) is Australia’s co-regulator for packaging and a not-for-profit organisation driving the development of a circular economy for packaging.

We are a dynamic, ambitious organisation, working at the intersection of industry, government, and community, helping to shape sustainable packaging outcomes that matter. We’re at an exciting stage of growth, and we take our governance seriously as the foundation that makes it possible.

Our small but highly effective Governance team sits at a critical junction, collaborating with the Board and executive leadership to make sure we operate with integrity and purpose. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone looking for meaningful work in an organisation that moves quickly and thinks carefully.

The Opportunity

This role is the operational backbone of the Governance team. You’ll work closely with the Corporate Governance Manager to keep our governance systems running smoothly and continually improving them. That means owning our planning tools, records, registers, and assurance processes, and actively contributing to how we develop and embed better governance practice across the organisation.

This isn’t a passive coordination role. We’re looking for someone who spots a gap, thinks through the fix, and gets it done. Your work spans across a wide range of stakeholders, from the Board, executive team and senior leadership, so the ability to communicate clearly and professionally in different contexts matters as much as the technical side.

What You’ll Do

Governance Planning & Systems

  • Own and maintain the team’s Asana planning boards, keeping work on track, priorities visible, and deadlines met.
  • Develop and maintain team process documents (SOPs), ensuring they reflect current practice and are easy for others to follow.
  • manage SharePoint-based records management, including document structure, naming conventions, version control, and access.
  • Support the preparation of Board and Committee meeting packs, maintaining accurate records of meeting schedules, actions, and resolutions.

Policy & Compliance Assurance

  • Maintain the policy register, tracking review cycles, ownership, and status across all organisational policies.
  • Support internal compliance assurance activities, including tracking obligations, monitoring completion, and maintaining assurance records.
  • Identify gaps in policy coverage or compliance processes and recommend solutions.

Risk Management Support

  • Maintain and coordinate the risk controls assurance process, including tracking control owners, evidence collection, and status reporting.
  • Compile risk insights and contribute to reporting for the Board and relevant committees.
  • Help identify process improvements that strengthen our risk management maturity over time.

We are seeking someone who is

  • Experienced - at least 5 years working within transformational organisations and environments; a background in governance, compliance, risk, legal, project management or executive support is desirable, but not essential.
  • Highly organised and reliable; you keep things on track and follow through.
  • Comfortable managing multiple workstreams simultaneously without losing sight of what matters most.
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Teams, Excel); experience with Asana or similar project management tools is highly regarded, and familiarity with agile working practices is a plus.
  • Clear and confident in written and verbal communication, able to adapt your style to different audiences.

You will be a great candidate if you are:

  • a self-starter: you identify what needs doing, take initiative within your remit, and know when to progress independently and when to check in.
  • analytically minded; you can diagnose a problem, think through options, and recommend a sensible path forward.
  • meticulous but solution-oriented: you understand the difference between getting it right and getting it perfect.
  • a curious, open communicator and ask questions when you’re unsure and flag issues early.
  • Someone who works well with others and can build trusted relationships across an organisation, including with senior stakeholders.
  • comfortable in a changing environment and bring a settled, constructive presence when priorities shift.

Why Join Us

  • You’ll be part of a small, close-knit governance team with real scope to shape how we work. Our organisation is growing its governance maturity, which means there’s genuine opportunity to build something, not just maintain it.
  • You’ll have visibility across the whole organisation, working with a capable and supportive manager who is truly invested in your growth and development.
  • We’re a flexible, hybrid workplace. The people who thrive here take pride in their work, hold themselves to a high standard, and bring real commitment to what they do, not because they’re told to, but because it matters to them.

What you’ll get

  • Hybrid working and flexible arrangements.
  • Opportunities to contribute to meaningful sustainability initiatives.
  • Collaborative, supportive workplace culture.
  • Professional development and growth opportunities.
  • Additional leave including Birthday and Impact leave.
  • Employee recognition and awards.
