About the role

In the role of Cartographer, you will provide authoritative, timely, high quality cartographic and Geographic Information System (GIS) products in a range of formats our client, stakeholders and the public. Using best practice, you will manage and maintain the state-wide spatial database and engage in statewide systems to support the protection of Queensland's waterways and the people that use them. You will also be tasked with assisting in updating and managing the Spatial Services ArcGIS Online web maps to ensure they will comply with ESRI guidelines, prior to ArcGIS Web AppBuilder in ArcGIS Online Retirement in Q2 2027.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain nautical products, available both internally and publicly, such as maps and chartlets, GIS Online, ArcGIS Online projects, and Open Data datasets, ensuring products are prepared to maritime standards.
  • Maintain the GIS spatial database to provide a single, statewide, point of truth using Esri ArcGIS products, ensuring database standards are maintained.
  • Administer support systems including Notices to Mariners to support the protection of Queensland's waterways and the people that use them.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the relevant Acts and Regulations with respect to spatial information requirements.
  • Build and maintain effective internal and external relationships to enable sharing of data, knowledge and spatial solutions.
  • Contribute to the investigation and implementation of innovative applications and technology to ensure efficient delivery of spatial services and workflows.

Highly desirable criteria

  • 5+ years’ experience in the role of a Cartographer/GIS Officer in a complex working environment
  • Practical experience with Esri ArcGIS products including spatial database management and ArcGIS Online.
  • Practical experience developing and configuring ArcGIS Experience Builder applications, including the migration of existing ArcGIS Online Web App Builder applications, implementation of complex queries and filters, and integration with enterprise geospatial databases.
  • Manages internal and external relationships: Works collaboratively with others
  • Applies specialist knowledge and skills: Demonstrates strong skills in their specialist and/or functional area.
