About The Consumer Data Right Division

The Consumer Data Right (CDR) is a world leading data portability initiative and a critical piece of Australia’s national digital infrastructure.

The CDR allows consumers to safely share the data that businesses hold about them. Sharing this data helps consumers to compare and switch between products and services, and encourages competition between providers, leading not only to better prices for consumers but also more innovative products and services. The CDR has been implemented in the banking and energy sectors, and is expanding to the non-bank lenders sector.

Role

Working closely with Treasury (which has overall policy responsibility) and other regulators, the ACCC has a key role to regulate and deliver the CDR. Within the ACCC’s CDR Division there are two branches:

  • The Accreditation, Compliance and Enforcement Branch assesses data recipient accreditation applications, promotes compliance, undertakes investigations and enforcement action, and assesses applications for exemptions. It also offers regulatory guidance and supports divisional finance and procurement.
  • The Solution Delivery & Operations Branch designs, builds, tests, runs and secures the technological infrastructure for data holders and accredited data recipients to securely exchange data, ensures, and performs program and business management functions.

The Strategy, Governance and Coordination team is a stand-alone team that reports directly to the CDR Executive General Manager. The team is responsible for a range of workstreams to support the Division to deliver its priorities and functions, including strategy, policy development and planning, workforce capability, secretariat services, divisional communications and business support and coordination.

More information about the Consumer Data Right is available on the ACCC website and www.cdr.gov.au .
