The Role

Commercial Branch is seeking to fill an APS 6 Commercial Officer role within the Applications & Cyber (A&C) Category Management team. These positions support Defence’s enterprise approach to software procurement by applying market intelligence, commercial expertise, and strong stakeholder engagement to deliver value for money across the software lifecycle. The ability to focus on outcomes and delivery are essential, and a sense of humour helps as well.

In this role, you may:

  • Provide commercial support across software procurement and contract management activities.
  • Contribute to category management through market research, analysis, and insights on software trends and suppliers.
  • Assist with contract and vendor engagement, including responding to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with stakeholders, service providers, and subject matter experts.
  • Identify opportunities to improve commercial practices and optimise value across Defence’s software investments.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team

Commercial Branch, as a part of Group Operations Division within the Defence Digital Group (DDG), is responsible for a wide range of activities across an ICT portfolio of over $1 billion. We perform commercial activities such as ICT category management to understand the market, leading sourcing activities to ensure ongoing commercial leverage for Defence, management of complex contracts to enable flexibility, a clear focus on industry and supplier relationships, and operations that ensure commercial best practice.

Through a centralised commercial capability, Commercial Branch provides provide an end to end service to Defence, delivering best-in-class global platforms, best-in-class sovereign capabilities and a best-in-class APS/ADF workforce for the digital age.

Working in DDG, you will be contributing your expertise to some of the most technically demanding and complex ICT and business transformation projects being undertaken globally. DDG is transforming Defence ICT capabilities as a critical enabler of Defence business. We build and maintain critical ICT infrastructure and systems, such as classified and secure military systems. We provide a modern, secure, sustainable and scalable information environment to enable current and future military and business operations.

As an APS 6 Commercial Officer, you will demonstrate:

  • A sound understanding or the ability to obtain the understanding of the Commonwealth Procurement Framework and its application to procurement and contract management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to assess risk, pricing, and performance considerations.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to prepare procurement documentation, reports, and stakeholder advice.
  • The ability to apply commercial judgement and incorporate market insights to support informed decision-making.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build productive working relationships.
  • A positive approach to working in a cooperative and agile team environment with shared responsibilities.
  • A capacity to grow and lead teams, managing self-improvement and professional development as well as the professional development of your team members.
