AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About The Role
The Senior Engineer will provide expert engineering advice to assess power system capability and develop solutions that support the secure, reliable and efficient planning of transmission networks in the National Electricity Market.
You will deliver complex technical analysis, lead projects, and coach engineers while working closely with internal and external stakeholders. The role involves detailed power system analysis using specialised tools, alongside applying sound engineering judgement to make recommendations in time-constrained or uncertain environments.
You will contribute to and peer review major technical studies, delivering clear, evidence-based insights to influence investment decisions and drive change. This role combines technical depth, strategic thinking, and stakeholder engagement, with accountability for both mentoring others and delivering high-quality, timely advice that supports AEMO’s objectives and reputation.
This is a high performing, well regarded team with supportive leadership, where you’ll bring hands on experience in power system analysis (including load flow) using tools like PSSE or PowerFactory, along with a genuine interest in long-term network planning.
What You Will Be Doing
- Deliver high quality power system analysis and modelling to assess system security, reliability, and development, informing network adequacy and investment decisions.
- Provide expert engineering advice to support planning outcomes, applying sound judgement in uncertain and time constrained environments.
- Assess future system needs including network augmentation, system strength, inertia, and voltage control for increasing inverter based and distributed resources.
- Lead end to end project delivery, including methodology, analysis, quality assurance, reporting, and stakeholder engagement.
- Develop constraint equations and inputs to support market modelling of future system security, reliability, and development pathways.
- Manage multiple priorities while communicating insights clearly, building stakeholder relationships, and coaching engineers to deliver high quality outcomes.
What You Will Bring To The Role
Education
- Tertiary qualification in electrical engineering (or related discipline) with strong experience in power system stability, dynamics, and analysis
- CPEng or RPEng (or working towards accreditation)
Experience and Knowledge
- Strong experience in power system modelling and analysis, including interpreting complex studies.
- Solid understanding of electricity transmission, generation, system operations, and market frameworks.
- Expertise in power system dynamics, stability concepts, and assessment techniques.
- Proficiency with simulation tools (e.g. PSSE, PSCAD, PowerFactory, Mudpack, Matlab) and exposure to programming/automation (e.g. Python).
- Proven ability to lead technical studies, deliver high quality analysis and reporting, and manage concurrent priorities.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and present complex insights clearly.
- Adaptable and solutions-focused, with experience addressing emerging power system challenges in fast paced environments.
Benefits
In return some of our benefits to you
- Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
- Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
- Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
- Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
- Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
