Unit Description

The Metabolic Diseases Unit is a state-wide referral centre providing specialist care for patients across Victoria and Tasmania with suspected or confirmed inborn errors of metabolism. We are offering a full-time, fixed-term training position within our growing, dynamic, multidisciplinary team.

This role provides hands-on experience in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of genetic metabolic disorders, including phenylketonuria, lysosomal storage diseases, glycogen storage diseases, and mitochondrial disorders. The position is primarily outpatient-based at our new, purpose-built facility on Elizabeth Street, with inpatient consultation services provided at The Royal Melbourne Hospital City Campus.

About The Role

This is Australia’s only full-time, accredited training position in adult metabolic medicine. You will gain exposure to the full clinical spectrum of inborn errors of metabolism in adults and develop an in-depth understanding of both basic and advanced metabolic investigations.

The role includes supervised experience in disease-specific treatment protocols, dietary and pharmacological management, and transition care. You will also have the opportunity to participate in early-phase clinical trials, gaining valuable experience in emerging therapies for rare metabolic conditions.

This position provides a unique foundation for a future career in metabolic medicine, clinical genetics, or rare disease research.

About You

  • Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (for international Medical Graduates)
  • MBBS or equivalent tertiary qualifications
  • Completion of one of more years of Advanced Training in a relevant specialty, such as metabolic diseases, general medicine, endocrinology, neurology or genetics.
  • Ability to work both in a multidisciplinary team but also independently (with supervision).
