Principal Urban / Strategic Planner
ALRA | Australia’s Leading Recruitment Agency
- $150,000 - $220,000 + Bonuses
- 2IC to a highly respected Director running a team of 30
- Brisbane CBD | Planning & Urban Design Leadership
Principal Urban / Strategic Planner - 2IC is a role built around one challenge: helping a successful team scale beyond the limits of a very busy Director.
The Planning & Urban Design group is already performing strongly. The projects are there. The clients are there. The team is there. What they're missing is an operational leader who can sit between the Director and the wider team, ensuring projects are properly resourced, commercial outcomes are achieved, people are supported and delivery remains exceptional as the business continues to grow.
This isn't a pure technical planning role.
It's leadership, operations, project coordination, mentoring and commercial management wrapped around one of Brisbane's most established Planning & Urban Design teams.
The business itself is a multidisciplinary design consultancy of 120 staff across Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, delivering planning, urban design, landscape architecture and architecture projects throughout Australia and internationally. The Brisbane office is the headquarters and home to the largest Planning & Urban Design team.
The opportunity is flexible on technical background.
Ideally, you're one of those rare planners who understands both Development Assessment and Strategic Planning. If not, expertise in either discipline is still highly attractive, with the business open to structuring leadership responsibilities around the strengths you bring.
The Role
You'll operate as the second-in-command to the Director, helping coordinate a team of 30 planners ranging from Principals through to juniors.
• Supporting project setup, resourcing and workflow management across the team
• Managing project commercials, forecasting and financial performance
• Coordinating delivery across both DA and Strategic Planning projects
• Mentoring Principals, Senior Associates and emerging leaders
• Supporting client relationships and acting as a key point of contact
• Improving operational efficiency and project performance
• Assisting with proposals, tenders and business development activities
• Helping drive the next phase of growth for the Planning & Urban Design group
• Working closely with leadership to build capability, culture and team performance
The Projects
Development Assessment & Development Services
From straightforward applications through to major and complex developments across Queensland.
Strategic Planning & Advisory
Providing policy, strategy and advisory services to government and private sector clients, ranging from targeted policy projects through to long-term city and regional planning strategies.
The variety is one of the major attractions of this role.
The Team
The Director you're supporting has built an exceptional reputation throughout the industry for producing high-quality work and developing strong client relationships.
She's highly respected, genuinely enjoys mentoring people and brings a positive energy that has become a major part of the team's culture.
This hire is as much about leadership style and culture fit as it is technical capability.
The wider business has grown steadily to 120 people across multiple offices and disciplines, creating an environment where planners work alongside urban designers, landscape architects and architects on projects locally and internationally.
