Environmental Engineering – AI Data Trainer

About The Role

AI is increasingly being used to reason through complex environmental challenges — but it needs expert guidance to get it right. We're looking for environmental engineers to help train and improve advanced AI models by stress-testing their knowledge, identifying gaps, and building the gold-standard solutions that make these systems smarter and safer.

This is a unique opportunity to apply your deep technical expertise in a new frontier: shaping how the next generation of AI understands water treatment, air quality, waste management, and environmental compliance.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design Expert-Level Problems — Develop complex, domain-specific challenges spanning contaminant transport, wastewater process design, hydrology, pollutant dispersion, and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
  • Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step technical solutions — including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and mass balance analyses — that serve as the benchmark for AI responses
  • Audit AI Outputs — Evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and engineering calculations for technical accuracy, regulatory adherence (EPA, ISO 14001), and safety
  • Improve AI Reasoning — Identify logical errors in AI thinking — such as incorrect stoichiometry, flawed hydraulic assumptions, or failure to account for secondary environmental impacts — and provide structured, expert feedback
  • Work Independently — Complete task-based assignments on your own schedule, with full flexibility over when and how much you work

Who You Are

  • Advanced Degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering (with environmental focus), or a closely related field — Master's (pursuing or completed) or PhD
  • Deep Domain Knowledge in one or more of: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, hazardous waste remediation, or EHS compliance
  • Strong Analytical Writer — able to communicate complex engineering concepts clearly and precisely in written form
  • Detail-Oriented — comfortable checking unit conversions (mg/L, ppm, etc.), chemical equations, and regulatory logic with a high degree of precision
  • No prior AI experience required — if you know environmental engineering, we'll handle the rest

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, data labeling, or evaluation systems
  • Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, SWMM, GoldSim)
  • Background in EHS consulting, regulatory compliance, or environmental impact assessment

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside world-leading AI research teams
  • Fully remote and flexible — work on your own schedule, from anywhere
  • Freelance autonomy: you choose your hours and workload (10–40 hrs/week)
  • Apply your expertise to meaningful work that shapes how AI understands the natural world
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as projects grow
