The Australian Financial Review is seeking a Work and Careers Reporter to pitch and write engaging stories focused on employment trends, workplace culture, and professional development. Reporting to the Wealth Editor, you will deliver "news you can use" to help an audience of professionals and aspiring leaders successfully navigate their careers. This is a prime opportunity to shape cultural conversations and elevate contemporary digital storytelling within Australia's premier business publication.

Day To Day You Will

  • Pitch and write compelling news and feature stories on employment trends and workforce culture.
  • Bring complex themes to life using data visualisation and creative digital storytelling.
  • Provide professionals and entrepreneurs with actionable insights to advance their careers.
  • Craft engaging, real-world "people stories" highlighting workplace successes and failures.
  • Manage the work and careers newsletter, writing sharp copy to drive audience growth.
  • Collaborate across the newsroom to deliver content for video and podcast platforms.
  • Work closely with editors and journalists to ensure accurate, up-to-date coverage.

What You'll Bring

  • Previous experience as a journalist, with a portfolio showing your ability to generate ideas and tell compelling stories.
  • Exceptional writing skills and demonstrated ability to craft audience-focused headlines.
  • Strong organisational skills to seamlessly balance multiple projects at once.
  • A meticulous eye for detail, a collaborative mindset, and a proactive attitude.
  • Motivation to contribute to value-add activities like events and podcast production.
  • A strong professional network and the ability to deliver sophisticated analysis.
  • Experience with digital article production or a strong willingness to learn.
