Project Engineer
Canyon Solar
Canyon Solar’s mission is to accelerate Australia’s transition to renewable energy by transforming car parks into clean energy hubs. We believe that instead of clearing land for large-scale solar, we should be using the built environment we already have. Car parks represent one of the country’s largest untapped resources—spaces where we can generate clean electricity, provide EV charging where people actually want to charge, deliver weather protection, and create infrastructure that looks good and serves the community.
At our heart, we are a technology company that operates in the renewable energy, manufacturing and construction sectors. We have developed the world’s first prefabricated solar canopy system, which we design, manufacture and install for retail, corporate, logistics and government clients.
We are currently focused on executing a strong pipeline of large-scale projects across Australia, and are looking for a project engineer to support our delivery.
Key responsibilities
The Project Engineer will work within our delivery team, and will work closely with the sales, development, production, and site teams. They will directly contribute to and influence the success and overall growth of the company.
Reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Engineer supports the delivery of our projects from contract signing through to completion, with involvement in internal capex projects. Our projects typically take around four months from start to finish – long enough to get stuck in, but short enough to see the results of your work in real time. Key Responsibilities include:
- Support project delivery from start to finish: Working alongside the Project Manager, you’ll help plan and coordinate projects from contract signing through to completion – developing and maintaining accurate project programs and schedules.
- Procurement & budgets: Assist the Project Manager with quoting and comparing subcontractor pricing and proposals, and preparing purchase orders. Coordinate the procurement, receipt and distribution of materials and equipment, and help track costs and forecasts against budget and delivery timelines.
- Quality & interface management: Manage the interfaces between disciplines – civil, electrical and mechanical – coordinating drawings and technical documentation so everything stays aligned. Take ownership of Canyon Solar’s QA documentation, including inspection and test plans (ITPs), ensuring it is completed to a high standard, and keep communication clear and timely across our development, production and site teams.
- On-site delivery, safety & compliance:. Working alongside the site supervisors and leading hands, you’ll carry out inspections, support testing and handover, and keep work moving safely and on track. You’ll also help ensure compliance with work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements, and that subcontractors provide the required safety documentation, such as Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).
- Continuous improvement & development: We value continuous improvement: contribute regularly to our improvements register, help close out actions and build up our installation manuals and standards, and share lessons learned to support product innovation and quality.
This is a hands-on, site-based role: you’ll spend a significant portion of your time on site across our projects, with regular travel within NSW and interstate as projects require. Our ideal candidate is based in (or open to relocating to) the Southern Highlands, where they can embed within the production and site teams, with some flexibility to work remotely between site commitments.
Ideal candidate
- are details-oriented, practical, and organised.
- show initiative, learn quickly, and take ownership of their work.
- have excellent soft skills, including communication skills, team work, time management and critical thinking.
- work well under pressure, demonstrate resilience to overcome challenges and apply a methodical approach to problem solving.
- are responsible, trustworthy and dependable team member that completes duties to a high standard.
- are passionate about Canyon Solar’s mission, have a positive attitude and keen to learn.
We’re looking for someone with around 3–5 years’ experience in project engineering, construction or a related project delivery environment, ideally with some exposure to renewable energy, manufacturing or building and construction. This experience will give you an excellent foundation for success. That said, we’re open to applicants from different career backgrounds who can demonstrate skills and experience that transfer into a project engineering role.
Essential requirements
- A diploma, trade certificate or degree in engineering, construction, project management or a related field – or equivalent industry experience. A university degree is not required; we encourage applicants with a diploma or similar to apply.
- Excellent computer literacy, including familiarity with different software and/or the ability to quickly learn new software systems. This includes proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite (including Excel).
- A current driver’s licence.
Desirable
- Exposure to solar PV, renewable energy, electrical or construction projects – including EPC-style project delivery.
- Experience coordinating subcontractors and managing project documentation on site.
- Familiarity with project scheduling and management tools
- An awareness of electrical and grid-connection processes and relevant Australian standards.
- A current White Card (Construction Induction Card), or willingness to obtain one.
- Familiarity with embedding AI tools into workflows
