About the role

Our Canberra Dispute Resolution team are currently recruiting a Solicitor (2-4 PQE) to work under the supervision of Partner, Emma Lawrence. Emma's practice includes class actions, regulatory investigations, commissions and inquiries general commercial disputes and complex Commonwealth litigation. The team has strong leadership from senior lawyers across the group who work together to expose you to good, challenging work. Whilst working in a friendly and encouraging environment, you will have access to supportive mentoring from senior lawyers, partners, and other legal experts (across different locations and practice areas), deepening your own legal expertise. However, you will be expected to be a "self-starter", proactively driving forward matters with an appropriate level of autonomy.

We are strongly connected to the national firm, playing a leadership role in the national government strategy and working across commercial matters with our interstate colleagues. Our lawyers get exposure to national and international matters, and help our clients deliver on their strategic priorities using our commercial acumen.

The Dispute Resolution practice is interesting and varied, we specialise in a mix of commercial litigation, public law, regulatory matters and government litigation. Our key clients include private sector clients across various industries and a number of large Commonwealth Government departments. If you have a keen interest in investigating and resolving disputes, and providing advice on risk and the avoidance of disputes, we would like to welcome you into the team.

You will have

  • First rate written and oral communication skills, strong drafting experience, top notch legal analysis and an ability to get across complex areas of law quickly.
  • Strong interest in the industry sectors in which we operate.
  • Self-awareness, positivity and have the ability to work well with others; being able to collaborate and work in a team is critical to success at Mallesons.
  • Strong commitment to client service and well-developed relationship management ability - you will play a role in supporting and actively developing our relationships with clients.
  • A willingness to embrace new technologies, including AI‑enabled legal tools, as part of your ongoing professional development.
  • Dispute experience gained in a similar environment is desirable as is an understanding of the operational processes of the Federal Courts and Tribunals. Experience from other jurisdictions is also valued.
