IREN

Job Type: Full-time | Location: Sydney, Australia | Department: Operations/Engineering | Reporting to: Engineering Manager | Work Location: Hybrid

IREN is a vertically integrated AI Cloud provider, delivering large-scale data centers and GPU clusters for AI training and inference. IREN’s platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and power in renewable-rich regions across North America, Europe and APAC.

The Senior Electrical Engineer is a key technical role within IREN’s Australian engineering team, responsible for the design, review, and delivery of electrical systems across IREN’s large-scale, renewable-powered data centres. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role provides hands-on electrical engineering expertise across capital projects and operational initiatives, ensuring all electrical systems are delivered safely, to Australian standards, and to the highest level of technical quality.

With 100% renewable energy, we build, own and operate our data centers and take pride in being at the forefront of sustainable solutions for the ever-evolving applications of high-performance compute. We believe that human progress is invaluable, but it should be done in the right way – responsibly, sustainably and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Master’s degree or postgraduate qualification is advantageous.
  • Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ), or equivalent Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status with Engineers Australia, or active progress toward registration within an agreed time frame will be well regarded.
  • 10+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience, with demonstrated involvement in the design and delivery of HV power distribution and related systems in mission-critical, data centre, industrial, or heavy infrastructure environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable Australian electrical standards and codes including AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008, AS/NZS 61439, AS/NZS 3017, AS 2293, and the National Construction Code (NCC).
  • Experience reviewing and approving designs produced by external engineering firms, with a solid understanding of owner’s engineer responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with LV switchboard design, generator paralleling and transfer switching, UPS systems, earthing and bonding design, and power quality considerations in data centre environments.
  • Understanding of protection coordination principles and system interfaces, switch gear settings and overall system integration.
  • Experience with commissioning and testing processes including FAT/SAT, pre-energisation checks, loop testing, and structured handover to operations.
  • Proficiency in electrical design tools (e.g., Amtech, DIALux, AutoCAD Electrical, Revit MEP or similar); familiarity with BIM workflows is desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical reports, specifications, and correspondence for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple concurrent deliverables in a fast-paced project environment with limited supervision.
  • Flexible approach to working hours to support IREN’s multi-time-zone operations; willingness to travel to Australian project sites as required.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager the Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for:

  • Act as the senior technical resource for high voltage (HV), medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV)electrical systems and power distribution across IREN’s Australian data centre projects, providing engineering support from concept through to commissioning and handover.
  • Prepare, review, and approve electrical engineering designs, drawings, calculations, and specifications for electrical distribution systems, incl but not limited to substations, transmission infrastructure, E-Statcoms, switchgear, UPS, generators, PDUs, lighting, and small power, in accordance with Australian standards (AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008, AS/NZS 61439, and related standards).
  • Review and provide technical comment on electrical deliverables prepared by external consultants, EPC contractors, and equipment vendors, ensuring compliance with IREN’s standards, project requirements, and applicable Australian codes.
  • Support the HV Design Lead and Power Systems Lead with LV interface coordination, including transformer secondary systems, MV/LV switchgear integration, earthing and bonding systems, and protection coordination.
  • Coordinate electrical design with mechanical, civil/structural, controls, and commissioning disciplines to ensure fully integrated and constructable designs.
  • Conduct site visits to verify that electrical installations comply with approved designs, specifications, and relevant Australian safety standards; support resolution of site technical queries, RFIs, and non-conformances.
  • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT) for electrical equipment; participate in commissioning activities and assist with energisation readiness reviews.
  • Maintain accurate as-built documentation and engineering records for all LV electrical systems, ensuring document control practices align with IREN’s engineering governance requirements.
  • Identify and escalate technical risks associated with electrical systems, contributing to risk registers and supporting mitigation planning led by the Engineering Manager.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of IREN’s Australian electrical engineering standards, design templates, and lessons learned documentation.
  • Liaise with local authorities, network service providers, and regulatory bodies (e.g., state electrical safety regulators, DNSPs) as required to support project approvals and compliance.
  • Ensure all electrical engineering work is carried out in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation and IREN’s safety management requirements.
