The Electrical Design Lead will act as the Owner’s Representative throughout the full lifecycle of our high-performance compute (HPC) projects, with a focus on medium and low voltage electrical distribution systems. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role is central to shaping the electrical design of our Australian data centres from early-stage concept through to detailed engineering, equipment commissioning, and handover.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent qualification recognised under Engineers Australia’s assessment framework.
  • Registered as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) with Engineers Australia, or actively working towards registration; or eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Engineer (RPEQ) in Queensland and/or under the relevant state engineer registration scheme (e.g. NSW).
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant post-qualification experience in low voltage and medium voltage electrical design, within a design engineering consultancy, heavy industrial or manufacturing facility, or mission-critical data centre environment.
  • Deep knowledge of relevant Australian Standards (including AS/NZS 3000, AS 2067, AS 61439, AS/NZS 4777) and applicable state WHS/OHS legislation and codes of practice.
  • Proficiency in the specification and application of electrical equipment including grounding systems, power transformers, standby generators, switchgear, cables, motors, VFDs, and all major components of an electrical distribution system for energy-intensive data centres.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of complete electrical distribution systems: load lists, single-line diagrams, cable schedules, equipment arrangements, and interconnection drawings.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard electrical design software, including one or more of: AutoCAD Electrical, Revit MEP, ETAP , EPLAN, Easy Power, or equivalent tools used in the Australian market.
  • Familiarity with Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), Permits to Work (PTW), and electrical safety obligations under state WHS/OHS frameworks.
  • Previous experience working with or for Tier III or mission-critical data centres is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across technical and executive audiences.
  • Strong team-work and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
  • Act as the Owner’s Representative across the full HPC project lifecycle for medium and low voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Develop functional descriptions and conceptual designs of electrical distribution systems, working autonomously or through external engineering firms to progress designs through to basic and detailed engineering.
  • Develop, review, and validate engineering deliverables including drawings, diagrams, calculations, material and cable lists, and electrical reports.
  • Manage design queries, field instructions, deficiencies, and technical matters arising across concurrent projects in a timely and structured manner.
  • Perform or support the specification, sizing, and selection of electrical equipment in accordance with Australian Standards and project requirements.
  • Lead and oversee equipment validation, installation, and testing and commissioning activities in coordination with manufacturing and construction teams.
  • Stay current with data centre power distribution trends, emerging technologies, and changes to Australian and international regulatory frameworks.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external engineering partners to ensure design intent, quality, and compliance are maintained throughout project delivery.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of IREN’s electrical design standards, templates, and engineering procedures.
