About The Role

Reporting to the Port Operations Lead, the Deck Hand/General Hand is responsible for providing pilotage transfer, labouring and general maintenance services at the Port of Bundaberg.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys practical outdoor work, marine operations and contributing to a safe and well-maintained port environment. Working as part of a small team, you will support the safe transfer of personnel, assist with vessel and vehicle maintenance, and help maintain port facilities and public amenities to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Safely transfer personnel from ship to ship or ship to shore, maintaining a high standard of safety awareness at all times
  • Perform deck hand duties to support marine maintenance and port operations
  • Carry out maintenance on company vessels and vehicles as required
  • Undertake general maintenance across the Port of Bundaberg, including:
    • Landcare management such as slashing, mowing and week control
    • General cleaning and maintenance of boat ramps, signage, and public amenities
    • Waste removal and general housekeeping duties
    • Wharf maintenance, including fender replacements
  • Follow safe work practices and promptly identify and address hazards to minimise risk and prevent injury
  • Maintain an up-t-date working knowledge of relevant legislation and requirements relating to marine operations and pilotage transfers
  • Work in line with GPC policies, procedures, values and behaviours

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience in marine operations, deck hand duties, maintenance, labouring or a similar operational environment
  • A strong commitment to safety and safe work practices
  • The ability to perform physically demanding, hands-on outdoor work
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships
  • Sound judgement and the ability to follow procedures while working effectively in a team environment
  • A willingness to learn and undertake ongoing training and development

Mandatory

Formal Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
  • Marine Radio Operators Certification
  • Certificate of Competency as an Open Coxswain (minimum)
  • C-Class Driver’s License (Manual Transmission)

Desirable

  • LR Truck
  • Tractor
  • Forklift

Training & Development

As part of a continuing training program, you will have the opportunity to undertake and gain:

Master <24M Near Coastal or Master Class V

  • Marine Engine Driver Grade 3
