About the role

You will be responsible for providing state wide leadership to ensure Aboriginal families in NSW have access to culturally safe, holistic maternal, infant, child, youth and family health services. The role also leads the development and implementation of strategic policy and systemwide improvements to enhance violence, abuse and neglect (VAN) service delivery and improve outcomes for Aboriginal consumers, families and carers in NSW.

What you will be doing

  • Provide cultural, strategic and evidence-based advice to the Executive Director, Healthy Families and Communities Branch, NSW Health executive leaders and Ministers on emerging, sensitive or high-profile Aboriginal health issues impacting maternity, children, young people and VAN services, ensuring advice reflects contemporary evidence, community expectations and statewide priorities.
  • Lead the development and coordination of statewide Aboriginal maternity, child, youth, family and VAN health policy and strategy, ensuring all clinical policy, service design and commissioning activities are evidence-based, culturally informed, strengths-based, integrated and aligned with NSW Health’s strategic directions.
  • Strengthen and expand the NSW Aboriginal Health Workforce Program, supporting NSW Health’s commitment to growing the Aboriginal workforce across salary bands and disciplines. This includes leading the development of training pathways, supporting quality supervision and practice development, and improving the cultural safety and accessibility of maternity, child, youth and VAN health services.
  • Drive the development, implementation and evaluation of cultural capability and cultural safety initiatives across maternity, child, youth and VAN health services.

About you

We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health with:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in public administration, health, behavioural or social sciences, or an equivalent combination of professional experience.
  • Demonstrated senior leadership experience within a large and complex organisation, with the ability to navigate multifaceted systems and deliver results across multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engagement and collaboration with Aboriginal Organisations and communities to transform health services.
  • Extensive experience in the development, implementation, review and evaluation of policies and programs, that improves health outcomes for Aboriginal families and communities in NSW.
  • Demonstrated understanding of impacts of colonisation, racism and intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal people including those who are victim-survivors of violence, abuse and neglect with complex needs.
  • In-depth knowledge of NSW Health, government processes, interagency structures and policy environments, and the ability to influence and lead system level reforms.
  • Aboriginal Identified Role: This is an Aboriginal Identified position under section 14(d) of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Proof of Aboriginality is required, and only Aboriginal people are eligible to apply.
