Role: Survey Systems Engineer – LiDAR & Field Operations

Location: Melbourne, VIC

Role Overview

We are seeking a Survey Systems Engineer – LiDAR & Field Operations to provide hands-on technical expertise across the design, deployment, operation, and maintenance of advanced survey and data acquisition systems. This role combines engineering, surveying, and field operations, supporting the capture and processing of high-quality LiDAR and imagery data across aerial, rail, and road-based platforms.

The role is highly practical and field-oriented, requiring close collaboration with project managers, surveyors, and clients to ensure survey systems operate reliably and data is delivered accurately and on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Survey Systems & Engineering

  • Provide technical expertise for the design, configuration, operation, and maintenance of survey systems.
  • Assemble and integrate surveying equipment components, including lighting, wiring, localisation, and power systems.
  • Design and implement real-time field surveying systems within appropriate electrical engineering and surveying frameworks.
  • Undertake light fabrication, wiring, and installation of instrumentation and power supplies as required.

Field Data Acquisition & Operations

  • Perform operational duties related to LiDAR and imagery acquisition, including:
  • Aerial capture using helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft
  • Rail-based survey platforms
  • Road-based and mobile mapping vehicles
  • Support field deployments by ensuring systems are correctly installed, calibrated, and operational.
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of field data acquisition activities to meet project timelines.

Data Quality & Processing Support

  • Ensure all planned data acquisition activities are conducted accurately, safely, and efficiently.
  • Assist with quality control and validation of acquired LiDAR, imagery, and survey data.
  • Support the processing and management of collected spatial data, including preliminary GIS and spatial workflows.

Stakeholder & Project Support

  • Provide technical advice and input to project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Liaise with project managers and customer representatives to support delivery objectives.
  • Assist with troubleshooting system performance issues and implementing technical improvements.

Essential

Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with survey systems, LiDAR, imagery capture, or mobile mapping platforms.
  • Practical skills in electrical systems, instrumentation, wiring, and system integration.
  • Experience supporting field-based data acquisition activities.
  • Understanding of surveying and geospatial data principles.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in field environments.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Background in Electrical, Mechatronics, Systems, or Geospatial Engineering, Surveying, or Spatial Science.
  • Experience with GIS or spatial data processing tools.
  • Exposure to aerial, rail, or mobile LiDAR operations.
  • Experience working on infrastructure, transport, or government projects.
