Sector Lead, Agriculture
Verterra Ecological Engineering
We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Sector Lead to oversee advisory and technical services related to land management, practice change and beneficial reuse of recycled organics in agriculture and horticulture. Working with a team of experts you will expand our digital agriculture and land management services to drive sustainability land management and environmental performance.
Key Responsibilities
• Leading Verterra’s agriculture and agronomy services, with a focus on sustainable land management and practice change.
• Providing practical agronomic advice to clients and internal sector leads to improve land management practices and the beneficial use of recycled organics and industrial ameliorants.
• Overseeing soil and crop assessments, including sampling programs, nutrient budgets, application recommendations, land suitability assessments and compliance plans.
• Supporting the safe and effective use of recycled organics, industrial by-products and other beneficial reuse materials in agricultural and horticultural systems to improve soil fertility, crop performance and long-term land productivity.
• Identifying opportunities to support land management practice change that improve productivity, soil function, erosion control, water use efficiency, nutrient cycling and sustainability outcomes.
• Expanding Verterra’s digital agriculture services, including the use of spatial data, field assessment and monitoring tools to support better farming, sustainability and land management decisions.
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with landholders, agronomists, farming groups, processors, contractors, government agencies, industry stakeholders and sustainability partners.
• Supporting business development by identifying client needs, developing service opportunities and helping grow Verterra’s agricultural advisory, sustainability and beneficial reuse offerings.
• Working closely with project managers and technical specialists to ensure projects are delivered safely, practically, commercially and in line with relevant environmental, agricultural and compliance requirements.
• Leading and supporting a multidisciplinary team across agronomy, soil science, recycled organics, industrial ameliorants, GIS, sustainability and environmental management.
• Preparing clear technical reports, landholder advice, management plans, sustainability outcomes and client recommendations.
Location
This role would suit someone based in south-east Queensland, preferably within the greater Brisbane area.
About You
You will be someone who understands farming systems and is passionate about helping landholders improve soil health, productivity and sustainability outcomes.
A strong practical understanding of agronomy, soil science, crop production, grazing practices and land management will be essential. You will also need to be comfortable working directly with farmers, contractors, technical specialists, industry partners and clients to turn good science into practical field outcomes.
• A qualification in Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Forestry, or a related discipline.
• Practical experience providing soil, crop, nutrient management, sustainability or agronomic advice.
• A strong understanding of agricultural land management, sustainable farming systems, and soil health, pasture production and nutrient cycling.
• Experience with recycled organics, soil amendments, biosolids, composts, manures, industrial ameliorants or other beneficial reuse products would be highly regarded.
• An understanding of how land management practice change can improve productivity, soil function, environmental performance and long-term sustainability.
• An appreciation of digital agriculture, spatial data, field mapping, monitoring tools or GIS and how these can support improved agronomic and sustainability decision-making.
• Experience working with farmers, landholders, contractors, processors, government agencies, agricultural industry groups or industrial partners.
• Strong field assessment, reporting, contractor management and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information in a practical and accessible way.
• A willingness to travel to field locations and work away when required.
• A practical, curious and solutions-focused approach, with enthusiasm for learning and sharing knowledge.
