Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for a Visiting Medical Officer position within Western Sydney Local Health District. The position is based primarily at Auburn Hospital within the Department of General Surgery. The appointment is to the District; while Auburn Hospital is the principal site, the successful applicant may be required to provide services at other WSLHD facilities as directed.

This role includes two elective half-day operating lists every four week, remunerated on a fee-for-service basis. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the general surgery on-call roster and will be able to access theatres for emergency cases arising from on call and to relieve general surgical lists vacated by other surgeons. He /she will be expected to contribute to clinical governance activities within the department, and supervise and teach medical students, junior doctors, registrars, and fellows while complying with the Code of Conduct of the Ministry of Health and meeting the standards of behaviour expected of specialists at Auburn Hospital.

The position will be for the remainder of the current quinquennium which concludes on 30 June 2027.

Appointees may be eligible for credentialing and privileging across all other facilities in the Western Sydney Local Health District and may be eligible for a conjoint appointment with the University of Notre Dame, Australia.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Fee-for-Service Contracts) Determination 2014.

Please outline how you satisfy the selection criteria listed below. In addressing the selection criteria, include any relevant skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience:

§ Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Applicants that have completed Subspeciality training in Upper GI or HPB surgery will be highly regarded.

§ Sound clinical knowledge in elective and emergency general surgery and upper and lower endoscopy demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position. To be successful the applicant must provide evidence of current GESA certification or re-certification for gastrointestinal endoscopy.

§ Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including high level interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

§ Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.

§ Commitment to establishing a general surgery practice based around Auburn Hospital.

§ High Level experience in teaching at student, JMO and registrar level.

§ Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.

§ Commitment to participate in the general surgery on call roster as requested by Head of Department.
