The Role

As a Strategic Planner , you will play a key role in shaping the City’s growth and development through the assessment of planning proposals, development of planning policies and delivery of strategic projects.

Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will contribute to planning proposals and rezoning applications, prepare Development Control Plans and Planning Agreements, and provide informed advice to Council and the Local Planning Panel. You will also support Council-led planning initiatives and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver outcomes that enhance the liveability and sustainability of the City.

This is a great opportunity for a DA planner seeking to gain valuable experience in strategic town planning as part of change in direction in their career or a recent town planning graduate looking to immerse themselves in a role working on a range of dynamic and challenging projects.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Assess planning proposals and provide strategic advice to Council on progression
  • Work on a range of planning and design projects and activities, including Development Control Plans, to develop, implement and review Council’s planning policies, land use strategies, and planning instruments.
  • Review and prepare submissions on behalf of Council to State Significant Development Applications, Review of Environmental Effects and other State Government led development proposals
  • Lead or support Council-initiated planning proposals
  • Engage and consult with internal and external stakeholders on key planning projects
  • Assist with the preparation and negotiation of Planning Agreements with applicants on behalf of Council for the best possible outcomes for betterment of Council and our community.
  • Manage specialist consultants to inform planning and development outcomes
  • Prepare submissions on State and Local Government policies, infrastructure projects and planning initiatives
  • Participate in community engagement activities for planning projects
  • Review and ensure the accuracy of Section 10.7 Planning Certificates before their release and undertake general correspondence and other duties as required.

You will have

  • Tertiary qualifications in town planning, urban design, architecture or a related discipline.
  • Experience working collaboratively within a team to deliver planning outcomes.
  • Sound understanding of planning processes, including planning proposals, plan-making, Local Environmental Plans, and Development Control Plans.
  • Proven experience managing planning projects, ensuring delivery within set timeframes and budgets.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Good understanding of the respective roles of State and Local Government and the private sector in planning matters.
  • Awareness of urban renewal, infrastructure, and community planning issues, and the frameworks used to achieve outcomes.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.Knowledge of relevant planning legislation, State planning policies, and statutory planning instruments
