Your Role And Responsibilities

The Technical Solution Engineer’s main responsibility is to support Solution Consultants in their selling efforts. In addition, they are expected to develop deep expertise in the Apptio solution and use of that solution in technical validation events in order to identify and share best practices and techniques in the application of that solution to customer and prospect challenges.

The TSE team is being built to support Apptio selling efforts by providing some of the more technical heavy lifting that is sometimes necessary to prove the value of the solution to particular customer challenges. The team is based in Apptio headquarters, and as such has close ties to the Customer Success and R&D teams to ensure they have the most technical resources at their disposal.

Required Technical And Professional Expertise

A Technical Sales Engineer’s specific job responsibilities are:

  • Support Technical Validation Events: Support the efforts required to successfully complete the sometimes necessary technical validation events that require Apptio Presales to leverage data and other information provided by a prospect to show that prospect, in detail specific to them, the value of leveraging Apptio’s solution. The Technical Sales Engineer is expected to be able to analyze the data provided by the prospect, incorporate Discovery information provided by the sales team, and target the success criteria to help build the necessary models, reports, and other components.
  • Collect and Share Lessons Learned: Share critical technical experience with the rest of the Apptio Presales team, both formally and informally.
  • Improve the Technical Validation Process: Leverage the broad spectrum of experience in completing technical proof work to improve the process by suggesting standard procedures to follow, best practices to leverage, and other ways to shorten the overall process and reduce the effort needed to be successful.
  • Provide Collaboration and Support: Assist Solution Consultants in the execution of any of their above responsibilities.
  • Provide feedback: Provide feedback to product management about the successes and failures in the field.

Preferred Technical And Professional Experience

The following are the required skills, knowledge, and experience for the Apptio Technical Sales Engineer role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems
  • 3+ years experience in application or web programming or 5+ years experience in database management and administration or business intelligence tool configuration and programming.
  • Familiarity with the tools used to manage an IT organization, including network and server monitoring, service desk, project management, asset management, database management, reporting and Excel.
  • Familiarity with basic financial and accounting concepts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Technical skill and/or ability to acquire in-depth knowledge and use of Apptio products
  • Strong work ethic
