Dentist Job Description

Position Overview

As a dentist, you will be involved in diagnosing and treating a diverse range of issues affecting an individual's oral health. The role of a dentist includes, but is not limited to, examining patients, coordinating diagnostic procedures including radiography, diagnosing dental disease, and performing oral surgeries such as the removal of wisdom teeth.

A dentist will have supervisory responsibilities over dental assistants, dental hygienists and dental therapists, and may have oversight of the day-to-day management of a practice.

Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Diagnose dental disease and develop comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plans
  • Undertake teeth cleaning, application of fluoride and other pharmaceutical interventions
  • Restore teeth using crowns, veneers and fillings
  • Replace lost teeth with crowns and dentures
  • Perform surgical procedures on the teeth, bone and soft tissues of the oral cavity
  • Write prescriptions to assist with pain and disease management
  • Create treatment plans for patients to maintain or restore oral health
  • Manage complex cases with multidisciplinary management
  • Administer anaesthetics as required (and where trained to do so)
  • Monitor growth and development of the teeth and jaw

Other Duties

  • Educate patients on the ways to prevent recurrence of disease
  • Assist with practice management as required
  • Supervise treatments by allied dental staff such as hygienists and prosthetists

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Dentistry (or equivalent) recognised by the Dental Board of Australia
  • Registration with the Dental Board of Australia

Applies decision making, clinical reasoning and judgement to develop diagnosis and treatment plans. Manages complex cases where applicable. Correlates findings from the dental and medical history obtained from patient along with clinical examinations, imaging and other diagnostic tests.

  • Financial Responsibility

Ensures patients’ understanding of financial arrangements and clearly explains patient fees and billings.

  • Infection Control Practices

Ensures that infection control practices are applied at all times.

  • Clinical Records

Keeps accurate and complete clinical records and ensures records are consistent with requirements under relevant legislation.

  • Equipment Maintenance

Maintains practice equipment and instruments as directed.
