Primary objective

To provide the Northern Territory Government, it’s Authorities and its Instrumentalities with high quality commercial legal

services.

Context statement

The Commercial Division provides strategic legal advice and drafting to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and

statutory bodies. The division applies a whole of government perspective and approach to its legal advice in areas including

major infrastructure projects, land development and management, funding agreements, mining and resources, revenue law,

native title and Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act matters, and a wide range of general commercial matters.

This position is to provide high quality legal advice and services for regulatory, major project, core government (including

procurement, funding and general contracting) and property matters, or for other practice areas within the Commercial

Division as may be required from time to time.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide commercial legal advice and legal representation.

2. Report to the Director, including through a supervising senior lawyer, on the progress of matters.

3. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.

4. Provide a high level of service to clients including preparation of advice, contracts, court documentation,

correspondence, briefings and other materials.

5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses

clearly and correctly.

6. Represent the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and stakeholders, and deal with people and issues in a professional

manner.

7. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.

2. Well-developed experience in the practice of law in relevant fields.

3. Proven experience in the organisation and management of a personal legal practice.

4. Good commercial drafting skills and ability to negotiate effectively and to communicate in a professional manner.

5. Ability to manage files to meet client needs and deadlines, cope with pressure and work as part of a team.

Desirable

1. Experience using knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of Government and the development of legal policy

in a practical way.

2. Ability to organise and manage a personal legal practice.

3. Experience in providing guidance to more junior staff for legal matters.
