Salary: $96,971 excl. super

An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Scientific Officer to join the team at Australia’s most trusted animal welfare charity. We exist for animals to live better lives and are looking for a new team member to help us in our mission to improve the lives of animals through care and evidence-based welfare advancements that change attitudes, behaviours, practices and laws.
RSPCA Australia’s science and policy team are purpose-driven and values-led, working in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Through our advocacy and evidence-building work, our science and policy team helps shape the future of animal welfare in Australia by developing public education materials, preparing briefings and information papers that translate science into practical guidance, and building strong relationships with animal welfare organisations, government and industry.
Specialisation in companion animals is highly desirable, and we may also consider other highly qualified candidates with experience in farm animal welfare (including poultry) or horse welfare[SF1] [TG2] [RM3] .

About the Role
The Senior Scientific Officer has direct responsibility for the provision of high-quality science-based information, advice and comment on animal welfare issues in support of the strategic objectives of RSPCA Australia.
The Senior Scientific Officer implements and applies RSPCA policy/position on animal welfare issues, works independently at times and often collaboratively with the team, initiates or seeks out new areas of work, and seeks opportunities to contribute to existing campaigns/priority areas.
RSPCA Australia is primarily seeking a Senior Scientific Officer to work specifically in the field of companion animal welfare.

About You
We’re looking for someone who has:
· Tertiary qualification in relevant discipline (e.g. zoology, animal science, veterinary science) or related discipline or equivalent professional experience. Postgraduate qualification highly desirable.
· Demonstrated experience in animal welfare and a strong commitment to advancing animal welfare outcomes.
· Excellent interpersonal skills, including proven experience working in a dynamic team environment and communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders.
Selection Criteria
· A demonstrated interest in animal welfare and commitment to the objectives, policies, values and principles of RSPCA Australia.
· At least two years’ experience in preparing and undertaking scientific investigation and analysis.
· Well-developed skills in interpersonal communication, an ability to manage diverse stakeholder views and to represent RSPCA Australia publicly at a national level in the media, presentations, and working groups.
· Well-developed research and analytical skills.
· Highly developed written and verbal communication skills including translating complex scientific evidence into practical guidance for diverse audiences.
· The ability to initiate new projects, and contribute to strategic planning, program design and evaluation.
· A proven ability to manage a varied workload, including planning and prioritising work to meet fixed and internally set deadlines.
