Manager - Environment and Approvals
Briscoe Search & Consulting
- Lead environmental approvals, governance and assurance for a fast-growing mining business
- Senior corporate role spanning compliance, monitoring, closure, sustainability and operational risk
- Experienced mining environmental leader wanted—confident with regulators
Our client, a newly established Australian mining business, is moving rapidly from planning into operations. With funding secured, key contracts in place and multiple sites being brought online, the business now needs an experienced environmental leader to establish the governance, approvals and assurance framework required to support safe, responsible and sustainable growth.
This is a rare opportunity to join at the front end of a greenfield growth story and shape how environmental obligations are managed across the business. You will take ownership of the environmental approvals pathway, statutory compliance, monitoring programs, environmental data, closure planning and regulatory engagement across the life of mine.
Based in the Perth head office with occasional site travel, this is not simply a site compliance role. You will operate at a corporate and strategic level while remaining close enough to operations to understand emerging risks, solve practical problems and ensure environmental requirements are properly integrated into mining and processing plans.
Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer and working closely with the Executive Leadership Team, you will provide clear, risk-informed advice on environmental approvals, liabilities, budgets and critical decision points. You will also lead and support the environmental team, 1 of which will be with you in Perth head office, with the other members of the team based across mine sites as they grow.
Your responsibilities will include oversight of:
- Life-of-mine environmental approvals and regulatory strategy
- Mining Act, Part V, clearing permit and groundwater licence obligations
- Statutory environmental reporting, including AER and AACR submissions
- Groundwater, surface water, dust, emissions and other monitoring programs
- Environmental data integrity, quality assurance and compliance registers
- Environmental OPEX and CAPEX budgets
- Mine closure planning, rehabilitation standards and financial provisioning
- Mine Rehabilitation Fund levy governance and closure liability estimates
- Tailings storage facility environmental compliance and assurance
- Scope 1 and 2 emissions, energy data, NGERS and NPI reporting thresholds
- Water balance modelling, biodiversity, offsets and sustainability initiatives
- Environmental audits, assurance programs and contractor performance
You will work closely with Mining, Processing, Geology, Engineering, Health and Safety, Commercial and Project teams to ensure environmental priorities support operational delivery. You will also manage relationships with regulators, consultants, laboratories, monitoring providers and other external stakeholders.
The role requires someone who can move comfortably between strategy and execution. You will need to define clear standards, maintain disciplined governance and provide senior leaders with confidence that environmental risks and obligations are understood, funded and actively managed.
Your extensive mining or resources environmental experience across approvals, regulatory compliance, monitoring, statutory reporting, closure planning, risk management and team leadership will place you well to be considered for this exciting opportunity. Top level candidates will also be commercially aware, organised and solutions focused, and will enjoy operating in a fast-moving environment where systems and operating disciplines are still being built and where there is genuine scope to influence how the business develops.
A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences or a related discipline is required. Experience in gold mining, operational restarts, tailings governance, decarbonisation or complex multi-site environments would be highly regarded.
You may currently be working as a Principal Environmental Advisor, Environmental Manager, Approvals Manager, Senior Environmental Superintendent or Corporate Environmental Lead. Technical expertise will be important, but professional judgement, commercial awareness and the ability to influence senior leaders will matter just as much.
