The Role

The HOPE Suicide Prevention Program is a non-clinical support program providing practical psychosocial support in the form of case management to people experiencing a suicidal crisis or who have attempted suicide. Support is provided for up to 12 weeks and targets those at the highest risk through referrals following hospital presentations or through specialist mental health services.

With quality supervision and clinical governance systems in place, this role is part of a multidisciplinary team of practitioners working in a collegiate and learning environment.

What You Can Expect To Do In This Role

  • Provision of non-clinical assertive outreach follow up support for individuals who have attempted suicide
  • Development and implementation of safety and well-being plans to outline a pre-determined set of actions to undertake in the midst of a suicidal crisis to support safety and reduce the likelihood of a further attempt of suicide
  • Provision of support and follow-up with family members, friends and support networks as and where appropriate to assist the continued support and recovery of the client
  • Facilitation of linkages with services and life sustaining supports.

What You Will Require

To be considered for appointment, prospective candidates will possess the following key selection criteria:

  • Qualifications in a relevant discipline applicable to the delivery of non-clinical psychosocial support services (ie Social Work/Case Management/Community Welfare or similar)
  • Demonstrated experience in a similar role providing a non-clinical outreach support service to vulnerable clients who have attempted suicide or who are experiencing suicidal crisis.
  • Demonstrated case management skills and ability to work effectively with clients, family members and service providers to identify solutions.
  • Sound understanding of the personal, family, and social issues associated with suicidal ideation and attempts, including awareness of groups identified to be at increased risk of suicide.

Proven ability to work with clients, particularly men across communities and populations including:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI)
  • Older people
  • Young people
  • People experiencing a mental health condition
  • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse communities and supporting migrants and refugees.

Further Information

This is a full time (1.0 FTE) 12 Month fixed term role until 30 June 2027 and is based at our Narre Warren Site (incorporating outreach service delivery) with occasional travel to other locations as required.
