About The Role
AEMO’s Near-Time Operations division plays a critical role in real-time electricity system operations across Australia. The division is responsible for supporting AEMO’s control rooms through the delivery of high-quality data, systems, training, assessment, and operational planning advice. Within Near-Time Operations, the Operational Forecasting team is responsible for the short-term forecasts that feed into key operational and market systems in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM).
You will be on the frontline of Australia’s electricity transition and support AEMO’s real-time control rooms navigate the energy transition. you will support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of forecast models for electricity demand, distributed photovoltaics (PV), and variable renewable energy generation central to AEMO’s market systems. You will engage with a wide range of external stakeholders, including energy market participants, weather service providers, software vendors, energy regulators and rule makers.
What You Will Be Doing
- Manage operational forecasting models for electricity demand, rooftop PV, grid-scale solar farms and wind farms, including the development of forecast models and daily forecast checks.
- Work closely with AEMO’s weather providers and control rooms to translate weather risks into system impacts and ensure operators have the information they need.
- Lead or support work in upgrading our forecasting models to improve model performance.
- Contribute energy and weather information and insights into operational advisories, power system incident reviews and market reports to support secure and reliable power system operations.
- Support upgrades of forecasting applications, reform deliveries and digital enhancements to improve the performance and reliability of forecasting systems and processes.
What You Will Bring To The Role
- Tertiary qualifications in science, engineering, mathematics, meteorology or a related statistical discipline.
- Experience in the energy sector or similar industry is desirable, but not essential, preferably in an operations, forecasting, or analytical role.
- Working knowledge of data analysis and visualisation techniques such as PowerBI, Databricks, SQL, Excel, R, and Python.
- Experience in statistical modelling and model improvement will be highly regarded.
- Experience preparing high-quality reports and presentations to communicate technical information to a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
