Local Laws Officer
City of Boroondara
- Join a dynamic, investigations team that supports each other to succeed
- Deliver meaningful outcomes to the community in safety and amenity
- $91,334 - $98,476 per annum (plus Super)
- Tool of trade vehicle provided (non-hybrid position)
Join us in building a professional investigations team and help deliver a responsive, community-focused Local Laws service. In this role, you will contribute to a safe, liveable and well-maintained municipality while providing high-quality regulatory service to residents and stakeholders.
About The Role
At City of Boroondara, our Local Laws directly contributes to our purpose of protecting the health, safety, amenity and assets of the municipality. Based within the large and busy department of Civic Services, the team works as part of five field-based teams and many others within the Urban Living Directorate.
You will respond to reported breaches of the Amenity Local Law and the Environment Protection Act, using education, investigation and enforcement to achieve compliance. The role involves managing a varied caseload, gathering evidence, preparing clear records and working within established procedures to resolve matters fairly and effectively.
The position includes investigating issues such as illegally dumped rubbish under the EPA, unsightly properties, overhanging vegetation, illegally advertising and the occupation of Council land, while providing courteous and timely service to community members. From time to time, you will also support the Animal Management team with park patrols, and work with external stakeholders including Victoria Police, the Magistrates’ Court and Council prosecutors.
Hours are allocated over a 16-week roster (42-hours per week) and rotating weekend work is required every 4 weeks with penalty rates that convert into an annualised salary. A fully maintained vehicle is provided as a ‘tool of trade’ to perform necessary duties and commute to and from work. This is a non-hybrid role as our ‘office’ is in the community, every day and our success comes from working together with other officers, as a team!
About You
We are looking for someone who brings sound judgement, a strong customer focus and a collaborative approach. You will be supported to build your knowledge and succeed in the role.
You will have experience delivering customer service in a complex regulatory environment or another fast-paced setting, with the ability to communicate clearly, build rapport and respond professionally in a range of situations under pressure. Experience in areas such as retail, hospitality, community services or other enforcement role can provide a strong foundation for success in this role.
You will be able to investigate issues methodically, collect information accurately and prepare clear notes and reports. Knowledge of compliance, local laws or related legislation will be well regarded, as will the ability to interpret policy and apply it in practical situations. If you are still developing in these areas, a willingness to learn will be equally valued.
Success in this role also requires respectful negotiation skills, sound problem-solving and judgement skills, de-escalating interpersonal situations with members of the community, and the capacity to work across the community each day, including walking for extended periods and assisting with animal handling when required. A qualification in enforcement, local laws, justice or a related field is desirable, but not essential.
