The Art Gallery Society of New South Wales (AGS) is the official membership organisation of the Art Gallery of NSW. Established in 1953, we inspire meaningful connections with art and culture, support the Gallery’s programs and build a vibrant community of members through exceptional experiences.

Look is a bimonthly 84-page arts publication that is a key benefit of Art Gallery membership, enhancing members’ experience of the Art Gallery. Look takes readers on a deep exploration of the art on show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, bringing artists, artworks and ideas directly to around 36,000 readers across its print and digital offerings and fostering members’ connection to the Art Gallery.

About the role

The Deputy Editor works closely with the Editor to manage the production of each issue of the magazine and associated online content. This exciting role blends creative planning, writing, editing, research and production oversight. Alongside the printed magazine, a new Art Gallery members’ website is planned to launch in August 2026 featuring engaging digital extensions of the magazine. The successful applicant will be part of this new offering.

Key responsibilities

· Support the Editor across all areas of magazine and web production.

· Manage deadlines across a number of stakeholders and contributors.

· Write, edit and proof-read to a very high standard.

· Source artwork images and photographs and coordinate image licensing.

· Communicate and liaise with a range of contributors and stakeholders.

· Brief writers, photographers and designers.

· Manage, build and update website and digital platforms using content management system.

· Contribute toward shaping Look’s digital profile.

· Edit other Art Gallery Society digital and print copy as needed.

· Build effective working relationships with a range of busy departments and teams across the Art Gallery, with our external production coordinators and advertising partners.

About you

You are passionate about the arts and have strong art historical knowledge and writing skills. With at least two years’ experience in a similar or related role and tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as Art History, Communications, Journalism, Creative Writing or other related studies or experiences, you take pride in creating an engaging product for your readers. You have excellent time management, and you are a creative thinker with a strong eye for detail.
