Primary objective
Manage client relationships and provide strategic advice in relation to the potential impact of projects and developments on
Aboriginal sacred sites in the Northern Territory.
Context Statement
The Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority is an independent statutory Authority established by the Northern Territory Aboriginal
Sacred Sites Act (NTASSA), designed to effect a practical balance between the recognised need to preserve and enhance Aboriginal
cultural tradition in relation to certain land in the Territory and the aspirations of Aboriginal and all other peoples of the Territory
for their economic, cultural and social advancement by providing advice on the protection of sacred sites in the context of
development.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high quality analysis and strategic advice in relation to the potential impact of projects and developments on
Aboriginal sacred sites.
2. Undertake research, analysis and provide advice in relation to environmental management plans, environmental impact
assessments and other regulatory frameworks relevant to the work of the Authority.
3. Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks, practices and procedures.
4. Manage client relationships in allocated portfolios.
5. Prepare and present submissions, reports and other correspondence.
6. Engage with a wide range of stakeholders including Aboriginal Land Councils, government agencies, landowners, proponents
in the agricultural, mining, oil and gas sectors, and developers of public and private infrastructure.
7. Organise work so as to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Law, Anthropology or other relevant discipline.
2. Proven experience in undertaking critical assessments of complex environmental, legal or technical reports.
3. Well-developed conceptual, analytical and collaborative skills evaluate issues and make recommendations
4. High-level oral and written communication skills and the ability to formulate reports for various audiences
5. Substantial experience in negotiating effectively and communicating in a professional manner.
6. Proven experience in managing projects and workload in order to meet requirements and deadlines, to cope with pressure
and to work as part of a team.
7. An ability to develop partnerships and collaborative relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Desirable
1. A sound knowledge of the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act1989 and other NT land and cultural heritage protection
legislation.
2. Prior experience working in an environmental or Aboriginal land based legal context such as Northern Territory cultural
heritage, land rights or native title.
3. Possession of a driver’s licence and the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
