Primary objective
Work as part of the corporate communications team that leads, develops and implements internal and external communication strategies
and media activities to achieve departmental goals.
Context statement
The Department of Tourism and Hospitality is an exciting portfolio that encompasses Tourism and Events NT, Licensing NT, Parks and
Wildlife Commission, Screen Territory. It is a fast paced environment covering multiple subjects and tight deadlines.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide media and communications strategic advice to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the agency’s
objectives, priorities, and government directions.
2. Lead the development, coordination, and implementation of internal and external communications projects, working closely with
senior executives, and key stakeholders.
3. Engage with local and national media to provide rapid and factual responses.
4. Work as part of the team to prepare speeches, editorial pieces, and develop and execute communication strategies for key initiatives,
campaigns, and crisis management.
5. Identify and leverage proactive communications opportunities to enhance the agency’s reputation and strengthen stakeholder
engagement.
6. Coordinate and manage communications and campaign activities to ensure effective results.
7. Monitor media trends and communications issues, providing strategic insights and recommendations to relevant officers.
8. Ensure programs meet and adhere to Northern Territory Government branding, digital, communication and procurement policies and
guidelines.
9. Support preparedness communications activities, responding in a positive, calm and flexible manner to change and uncertainty.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven experience in media and communications, with demonstrated success in managing media issues.
2. Extensive experience in writing, editing, and producing a range of communication materials, including media releases, speeches,
editorial content, social media content, and communication strategies, tailored to diverse audiences and platforms.
3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging for different stakeholders, translating complex
information into clear, accessible language.
4. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, conflicting workloads while maintaining attention to detail and achieving timely, effective
outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
5. Proven ability to work effectively in senior executive, politically sensitive and cross-cultural environments, applying strategic thinking
to resolve complex issues and achieve positive outcomes.
6. Practical, contemporary knowledge of the broader strategic communication and media industries, including publications, media
management, creative graphic design concepts, social and digital platforms and networks, promotions, advertising management,
market research and events or product launches.
7. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualification. Experience in journalism or a related field will be highly regarded as well as working at senior levels of
government.
2. Knowledge of subject matter areas including tourism, major events, parks and wildlife.
