About The Role

As the Head of Energy Transactions and Deal Development you will lead and oversee key projects across major energy infrastructure and renewable projects and be part of building and leading a highly capable team.

A key part of this role will see you work with clients to support and enable transactions and develop deals. This work will include options assessments, supporting due diligence, building business cases from a procurement and financing perspective, and structuring transactions. You will support clients through due diligence, contract negotiations and evaluations, commercial structuring and risk allocation – with a strong focus on delivering outcomes that enable investment, development and operational success.

You will bring a strong commercial and/or transactional background, with a deep understanding of energy transactions and markets, as well as commercial / corporate experience.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial & Investment Analysis

• Support development of options analysis, business cases and commercial due diligence
• Assess returns, risks and bankability of assets, project developments and transactions
• Support development of investment papers
• Analyse revenue structures
• Review contracts and assess appropriate risk allocation

Transactions and Deal Delivery

• Lead or contribute to key aspects of energy sector transactions including:
• Commercial and regulatory due diligence
• Term sheet and agreement development
• Contract negotiations (e.g. PPAs, EPC/O&M, connection and access agreements)
• Support through to financial close
• Translate transaction insights into actionable advice to support developers, investors and operators.

Client Engagement & Delivery

• Act as a trusted advisor to project sponsors, financiers, and developers.
• Build deep, long-term relationships through delivery excellence, commercial insight and clear communication.
• Identify and support the conversion of new opportunities and scope expansion.

Project and Team Management

• Lead multidisciplinary teams on advisory engagements, balancing technical, legal, and financial inputs.
• Drive timely delivery of projects while maintaining quality, commercial relevance and client satisfaction.

Mentorship & Capability Development

• Provide support and development to junior consultants and analysts.
• Contribute to the development of Blackstart’s market offerings and intellectual capital.

Skills & Experience

• Minimum 7 – 10 years’ experience in commercial, legal, or management consulting roles.
• Strong experience in Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) or similar advisory environments with a focus on energy, infrastructure or transactions.
• Demonstrated track record in:
• Energy project development or financing
• Contract negotiation and deal execution
• Transaction advisory or due diligence
• High level of commercial acumen with a deep understanding of how deals are structured and closed.
• Familiarity with renewable and firming technologies (e.g. wind, solar, BESS, gas).
• Strong communication skills – written and verbal – with the ability to simplify complexity for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience managing consulting engagements or internal workstreams with autonomy.
• Ability to influence, lead by example, and deliver under pressure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Law, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MBA, JD, Master of Finance) are desirable.
