Secondary Systems Engineers

Enervia

About Enervia

Enervia isn't a standard engineering consultancy. We are a technology-focused company, a startup in mindset and pace, applying science, data and research-driven methods to high voltage power infrastructure. We design and deliver transmission lines, AIS and GIS substations up to 500kV, and renewable energy assets across solar, wind and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), backed by deep technical knowledge and a team of genuinely knowledgeable people who like solving hard problems properly.

We are growing, and we are looking for people with motivation, sharp technical minds, and real commitment to what Enervia is building.

The Role

This is a role with real ownership. As we grow our secondary systems capability, we are looking for engineers to help shape how protection, control and secondary systems are designed and delivered at Enervia, and we are open to all levels of experience. What matters most is how you think: technically minded, motivated to learn, and keen to build something better rather than simply replicate the standard approach. Strong secondary systems experience is valued and will let you shape technical direction from day one; if you are earlier in your journey but bring the right mindset and a solid foundation, there is room to grow into it here.

You will contribute to the design and delivery of protection, control and secondary systems for transmission and distribution networks up to 500kV, using data, analysis and sound engineering judgement to get it right, while bringing a technology, data and research mindset to how it is done. Your work will include:

  • Protection and control schematics, single line diagrams, wiring, termination diagrams and cable schedules
  • Relay selection, protection setting calculations and coordination studies (overcurrent, earth fault, distance and more)
  • Power system studies — load flow, short circuit, arc flash and stability analysis
  • Control and relay panel design — GA drawings, functional block diagrams and bills of materials
  • SCADA, communications and substation automation, including system integration
  • AC/DC auxiliary supplies, metering schemes, and FAT and commissioning support
  • Helping shape the discipline — contributing to standards, tools and workflows, and finding better ways to solve problems through data and research
  • Technical leadership, reviewing and approving engineering deliverables, and mentoring engineers

About You

  • Technologically minded — you reach for data, tools and first-principles thinking, and you're curious about how things can be done better
  • Motivated to learn — genuinely keen to pick up new concepts and keep growing your technical edge
  • Innovative — keen to improve how we solve problems from a technology, data and research point of view, not just repeat the standard approach
  • Committed — willing to go the full mile and a bit extra, and invested in Enervia's objectives

On the technical side, you'll bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in Electrical or Power Engineering
  • Experience in secondary/protection and control design, ideally within the Australian utility or transmission sector — strong experience is valued, but we're open to engineers earlier in their journey who bring the right mindset and fundamentals
  • A solid grasp of protection coordination and secondary systems design, or the foundation and drive to develop it
  • Familiarity with relevant Australian standards (AS/NZS) and major network service provider requirements
  • Chartered Engineer status (Engineers Australia), or working towards it, is welcomed but not required for every level

More experienced applicants, up to senior and principal level, can also expect to take on technical leadership and governance across multidisciplinary teams, review and approve engineering deliverables, mentor other engineers, engage clients and stakeholders as a trusted advisor, and contribute to tendering, proposals and commercial decision-making. We will match the role to your experience and ambition.
