The Opportunity

As a Senior Child Saftey Practitioner (CSQ Level 2) you will work in the areas of child protection, children in care and family support. You will be responible for:

Responding to concerns regarding the safety and wellbeing of children and applying the provisions of the Children and Community Services Act 2004.

Taking legal action to promote the safety and wellbeing of children where necessary.

Undertaking case work activities of a complex nature.

Providing services to children placed in the care of the CEO.

Providing advice and expertise to District staff.

Assisting and planning with District staff and others to develop community and family capacity to provide a safe environment for children and other vulnerable people.

Developing and maintaining a high degree of knowledge and skills in providing services and supports families and communities to enhance the safety and wellbeing of children and other vulnerable members of the community.

Investigating serious concerns about the welfare and safety of children and taking action appropriate to the situation.

Banksia Hill Detention Centre (position is based in Canning Vale)

The Banksia Hill Co-Located Team assist young people in detention and custodial staff to understand the Department of Communities processes and are a conduit for communication and sharing information. They promote contact between Department of Communities staff and young people in detention and facilitate timely exchange of information and release planning. They can assist with a range of tasks for young people in care or subject to open child protection cases.

There is currently one [1] fixed term position until 31 Janaury 2027 with the possibility of extension.

Family Court (position is based in Perth CBD)

The Family Court Co-Located Team are located within the Family Court and provide the interface of information sharing between the Family Court and the Department of Communities. It is intended to improve the timeliness and quality of information shared between the Family Court and state and territory court agencies, to facilitate more collaborative inter-jurisdictional working arrangements, and to support decision-making to improve child and family safety.

There is currently three [3] fixed term positions available until March – June 2027 with the possibility of extension.

Children’s Court (position is based in Perth CBD)

The Perth Children’s Court Co-Located Team acts as the Department’s liaison within the Children’s Court, supporting the identification and representation of children and young people in the care of, or involved with, the Department who appear before the Court. The team provides advice to Magistrates, legal representatives and Departmental staff on child protection matters, departmental policy, procedures and care arrangements. It facilitates communication between the Court, case managers, service providers and other stakeholders to support informed decision-making and bail and release planning. The team also assists with identifying children in care who enter custody, ensuring relevant districts and case managers are notified, and provides guidance and training to Departmental staff regarding Children’s Court processes and requirements.

There is currently one [1] permanent position and one [1] fixed term position available until 16 August 2026 with the possibility of extension.

Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments will be made for this or similar future vacancies fixed term or permanent that arise within the next 12 months across the Department of Communities.

Qualification Requirements

You must have a Bachelors degree in Social Work, Psychology, or relevant human services area to be eligible for this position. All overseas qualifications must be assessed for Australian equivalency.
