Electronics Engineering Lead

ProFound People

An Australian research and manufacturing company developing advanced defence and deep tech systems is expanding its engineering leadership and now hiring an Electronics Lead to take technical ownership of the electronics, PCB, embedded, and software disciplines behind its complex hardware platforms.

In this role, you will lead a multidisciplinary team across electronics, PCB design, embedded, and software, with electronics and PCB design firmly at the centre of the work. You'll own the design cycle from concept through to validation, set the technical direction for the group, and take accountability for the quality and reliability of the hardware that goes into the platforms. This is a senior, hands-on leadership position for someone who has run teams and design programs before and knows how to hold engineering rigour and delivery pace in the same hand. You'll be as comfortable getting into the detail of a difficult board level problem as you are setting direction, growing capability, and mentoring the engineers around you. This is a scale-up environment that moves quickly, so it suits someone who pitches in where the team needs them rather than working to rigid process for its own sake.

This is a full-time, onsite role based in Adelaide. For interstate candidates open to relocating, relocation cost allowance will be provided. Due to the nature of the work, Australian Citizenship is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and set the technical direction for the electronics, PCB, embedded, and software disciplines, with electronics and PCB design as the primary focus.
  • Own the electronics design cycle end to end, from concept and PCB design through to integration, test, and validation.
  • Take accountability for the reliability and quality of the electronic hardware going into the platforms, identifying and resolving design risk early.
  • Coordinate the embedded systems and firmware effort alongside the broader software work, ensuring hardware and software integrate cleanly.
  • Run projects from a lead perspective, owning delivery and balancing engineering rigour with the pace of a fast-moving development environment.
  • Grow the capability of the team, mentoring electronics, embedded, and software engineers.
  • Stay hands-on, getting into the detail of difficult design problems rather than managing purely from a distance.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.
  • A strong electronics and PCB design background, with deep technical credibility in this area.
  • Several years of experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams across electronics, embedded, and software, with ownership of full design cycles and project delivery at a lead level.
  • A seasoned, senior profile rather than a purely hands-on individual contributor, comfortable taking charge of teams and design programs.
  • Solid embedded systems and firmware exposure, with enough software understanding to lead the function.
  • Background in a complex, systems oriented product environment. Defence and automotive are highly relevant, with robotics or industrial automation of comparable product complexity also considered.
  • Genuinely hands-on and delivery focused, comfortable balancing quality with momentum in a scale up environment rather than working to rigid process for its own sake.

Desirable but not essential

  • Automotive electronics design background.
  • Experience in deep tech robotics or industrial automation involving comparable electronics and embedded complexity.
