Primary objective
The Cultural Engagement Officer provides cultural advice to Community Corrections staff and to support offenders to
successfully complete court orders through enhanced case management. The role fosters inclusive, respectful and
meaningful engagement between Aboriginal clients, their families and communities, and the Department of Corrections.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide expert cultural knowledge and advice to Probation and Parole Officers to inform Court assessments, Parole
Reports and case management decisions. This includes gathering collateral information, undertaking community checks,
managing risks and reviewing reintegration plans.
2. Undertake regular visits to remote communities to develop and maintain strong, respectful relationships with Elders,
families, and service providers, as well as representing Community Corrections in community meetings, forums and
events.
3. Interpreting conditions, legislation and other information into an appropriate language for offenders and their families,
to support understanding, compliance and successful completion of community-based orders.
4. Educate, coach and mentor staff on Aboriginal culture, communication styles and community dynamics. Support
embedding culturally safe and responsive practices into Community Corrections operations.
5. Undertake ongoing consultation and information sharing with communities to support safety and early intervention.
Collect community feedback and contribute to continuous improvement of services, policies and engagement
approaches.
6. Assist to develop transition plans to re-integrate high risk and complex needs offenders back into the community and
participate in brief interventions to manage risk to offenders, their families and the community.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Knowledge and familiarity with remote Aboriginal communities with demonstrated understanding of culturally specific
factors such as language, communication styles, custom and practice
2. Demonstrated community engagement expertise and experience with a variety of stakeholders in remote community
contexts.
3. Ability to understand and translate complex information regarding legislation and court orders into plain language in a
culturally appropriate manner.
4. Demonstrated ability to identify, plan and implement stakeholder consultation to enhance case management with a
focus on risk and rehabilitation outcomes.
5. Demonstrated ability to advise on issues involving services to Aboriginal peoples and the ability to identify, prepare and
implement training, coaching and mentoring to all levels of staff around culturally informed practice.
6. Ability and willingness to undertake extensive remote travel via vehicle and light aircraft and hold a current manual
Northern Territory drivers’ licence or the ability to obtain.
