The Position

This position plays a key role in partnering with leaders across Council to strengthen workplace health and safety performance, foster a positive safety culture, and ensure compliance with legislative and self-insurance requirements.

The role is responsible for the effective management, implementation and continuous improvement of Council's Work Health and Safety Management System (WHSMS), supporting the ongoing maintenance of Council's self-insurance licence and alignment with relevant WHS legislation, standards and best practice.

Working collaboratively with managers, supervisors and workers, the position leads and supports initiatives relating to contractor management, events management, health surveillance, emergency preparedness and response, ensuring safety controls are proportionate to the risks associated with Council's diverse operations.

The WHS Business Partner provides specialist advice and support to the WHS Committee, Safety Leadership Team and Executive Management Team, contributing to strategic decision-making and embedding safety as a core organisational value.

In partnership with the Workers Compensation Business Partner, the role analyses incident, injury and risk data to identify trends, develop targeted prevention strategies and drive continuous improvement across Council.

The position also provides expert guidance, coaching and support to managers and staff to ensure the consistent application of the WHSMS and promote proactive risk management practices throughout the organisation.

Essential

  • Tertiary qualification in Safety Management, Health Science or related discipline
  • Accredited Lead Auditor in Work Health and Safety
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • Knowledge of WHS legislation, Codes of Practice and industry standards
  • Experience in supporting managers to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement controls
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • Experience in incident investigation, root cause analysis and corrective action planning
  • Strong communication, consultation and negotiation skills, both written and verbal, to provide clear advice and guidance
  • Experience in a self-insurance environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and WHS systems

Salary & Employment Conditions

  • Permanent position, 35 hours per fortnight
  • This position is a Grade 7, salary range is $104,720 p.a. with progression to $115,592 p.a. on demonstrated competencies, with performance progression to $122,668 p.a, plus 12% Super
