VIXA | Executive Legal Recruitment

Commercial Litigation Partner | Sydney

▸Nationally recognised disputes practice

▸Growth mandate — strong national platform for an ambitious litigator

The Firm

Our client is a leading Australian law firm with a highly regarded litigation and dispute resolution practice. The firm is consistently recognised in Doyle's Guide, Legal 500, and Chambers Asia-Pacific for its work across commercial litigation, regulatory disputes and insolvency — with a national footprint, a cohesive partnership, and a client base that spans listed companies, financial institutions, government bodies and high-net-worth private clients.

The firm operates a genuinely collegiate partnership model. It is commercially sophisticated, strategically oriented and has invested deliberately in growing its disputes capability in Sydney. The partnership is engaged, supportive and clear-eyed about what it takes to attract and retain a senior lateral partner.

Full details of the firm — including partnership structure, remuneration model, client base and strategic direction — can be provided confidentially to suitable candidates who wish to progress.

The Opportunity

Commercial litigation in Sydney continues to generate sustained demand for experienced, technically capable partners. Regulatory enforcement has intensified across multiple sectors — with ASIC, the ACCC and a range of sector-specific regulators driving a material increase in the volume and complexity of matters. The broader economic environment — characterised by tightening margins, distressed counterparties and heightened scrutiny of corporate conduct — is generating new disputes. For an ambitious partner with a strong client network, the market conditions are favourable to grow leading practice on the right platform.

VIXA is working with a firm that is actively investing in its Sydney disputes capability and is seeking a partner who brings both technical excellence and a portable client following to accelerate that growth. This is an opportunity to join a respected practice at a moment of genuine strategic intent — and to be given the platform, support and partnership culture to build something significant.

The Role

The incoming partner will lead and manage complex commercial disputes across one or more of the following areas, depending on specialisation:

  • General Commercial litigation
  • Regulatory and compliance — ASIC, ACCC and other regulatory enforcement matters
  • Class actions — defence-side work for institutional and corporate clients
  • Insolvency and restructuring — creditor-side and insolvency practitioner engagements

The role carries genuine leadership responsibilities, including supervision and development of junior lawyers, active participation in firm-wide BD initiatives and full engagement in the partnership.

About You

We are seeking an experienced Litigation Partner who is ready for a strategic move and can demonstrate the following:

  • 10–25 years' post-admission experience with a substantive commercial litigation focus
  • Deep technical capability across complex commercial disputes — preferably with expertise in one or more of the sub-areas noted above
  • A current book of business exceeding $1.5M+
  • Established client relationships with corporates, institutions, insurers, government or insolvency practitioners
  • A track record of business development and the profile to continue building at a new firm
  • Experience from a top-tier, leading mid-tier or well-regarded specialist disputes firm
  • The commercial instinct and interpersonal credibility to operate effectively within a collegiate partnership

About VIXA Partners

VIXA Partners is a specialist executive legal recruitment firm focused exclusively on Partner placements across Australia's top-tier and upper mid-tier law firms. We operate across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra.

Scott Francis, Managing Director of VIXA, brings over 25 years of direct experience inside Australia's leading law firms — as a lawyer for 20 years in top-tier and international firms, and as National Executive Talent Manager at one of Australia's leading top-tier firms (responsible for partner recruitment nationally). He is an admitted lawyer in New South Wales, Queensland and New Zealand, is recognised as a dispute resolution lawyer in Legal 500 Asia Pacific, and is an accredited Executive Leadership Coach.

This depth of first-hand experience — inside the firms, inside the roles, inside the partnerships — means VIXA provides genuinely informed advice that goes well beyond what a conventional recruiter can offer. We understand the strategic needs of law firms, the nuances of key practice areas, and what it takes to assess cultural fit, client portability and long-term earnings potential at the partner level.

Our approach is consultative, relationship-driven and unhurried. We take the view that a lateral partner move is one of the most significant professional decisions a lawyer will make — and we treat it accordingly. Candidates are encouraged to ask every question, take their time and reach a decision that is in their best interests.

No information about you will ever be shared with any party without your express consent. Your details, your enquiry, and the existence of any conversation between us will remain strictly confidential.
