The Griffith facility, located at 7 Lenehan Road, Griffith NSW 2680, operates as an authorised dealer and service centre for Kenworth, DAF, Cummins and PACCAR products, supporting the transport operators of the Riverina region and surrounding agricultural communities.
The Griffith branch offers new and used truck sales, a fully equipped workshop providing mechanical servicing and repairs, and a large parts warehouse stocking genuine Kenworth, DAF, Cummins and PACCAR parts. The facility provides a 24-hour breakdown service to keep regional transport operators on the road.
An opportunity exists for 2 experienced and qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic (Diesel Motor Mechanic – ANZSCO 321212) to join the Griffith workshop team.
Position Summary
The successful applicant will be responsible for servicing, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing diesel-powered heavy vehicles – primarily Kenworth and DAF trucks, along with Cummins-powered equipment – ensuring that customer and company fleet vehicles remain in optimum operating condition and comply with all manufacturer specifications, workplace safety requirements and road transport regulations.
Key Responsibilities
• Conducting routine servicing, preventative maintenance and scheduled inspections on heavy diesel vehicles, including Kenworth and DAF trucks.
• Performing major mechanical repairs, engine rebuilds and component overhauls including Cummins diesel engines.
• Diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical faults using specialised diagnostic equipment.
• Ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy, safe and operational at all times.
• Maintaining accurate service records, maintenance schedules and repair documentation.
• Working in accordance with manufacturer specifications, Kenworth, DAF and Cummins technical standards, and workplace safety procedures.
• Assisting in maintaining a clean, safe and efficient workshop environment.
• Minimising vehicle downtime through efficient troubleshooting and repair practices.
• Inspecting heavy vehicles and identifying maintenance requirements before failures occur.
• Ensuring compliance with transport industry safety standards and environmental regulations.
Tasks to be Performed
The Heavy Vehicle Mechanic will maintain, test and repair diesel engines and mechanical systems of heavy vehicles, including transmissions, steering systems, suspension components and braking systems.
• Detecting, diagnosing and rectifying faults in diesel engines and mechanical components, including Cummins engine systems.
• Dismantling and removing engine assemblies, gearboxes, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other major components for inspection and repair.
• Examining parts for wear, damage and defects using precision measuring instruments.
• Repairing or replacing worn, damaged or defective parts and components using genuine Kenworth, DAF and PACCAR parts.
• Reassembling engines, transmissions and mechanical systems following repairs.
• Performing scheduled maintenance services including oil changes, lubrication services, engine tune-ups and filter replacements.
• Testing and adjusting repaired mechanical systems to ensure correct operation and optimum performance.
• Diagnosing and testing mechanical and electronic systems using computer-based diagnostic equipment.
• Repairing and servicing hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel injection and electrical systems associated with heavy vehicles.
• Maintaining brake systems, steering systems, suspension systems and driveline components.
• Conducting road tests to evaluate repairs and vehicle performance.
• Preparing maintenance reports and recording completed work in workshop management systems.
• Assisting with roadworthiness inspections and identifying work required to achieve compliance.
• Ensuring all work is completed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace health and safety requirements.
Skills Required
• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding abilities relating to diesel engines and heavy vehicles, including Kenworth and DAF platforms.
• Sound knowledge of diesel fuel systems, Cummins engine management systems and emission control systems.
• Proficiency in the repair and maintenance of transmissions, differentials, braking systems, steering systems and suspension systems.
• Ability to use electronic diagnostic equipment and computer-based testing systems including PACCAR and Cummins diagnostic tools.
• Experience working with hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems commonly found in heavy vehicles.
• Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics and workshop instructions.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy regional dealership workshop.
• Good communication and problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to workplace health and safety practices.
Experience Required
• A minimum of three (3) years’ relevant post-qualification experience as a Diesel Motor Mechanic, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or equivalent occupation; or
• At least five (5) years of relevant work experience gained in the repair and maintenance of heavy diesel vehicles and commercial trucks.
• Demonstrated experience working on Kenworth trucks, DAF trucks or Cummins-powered equipment will be highly regarded.
• Experience using modern diagnostic equipment, including PACCAR ESA, Cummins INSITE or equivalent workshop management and diagnostic platforms.
Qualifications Required
• AQF Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology; or
• AQF Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology; or
• AQF Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Fuel Technology; or
• An equivalent overseas trade qualification recognised as comparable to an Australian AQF qualification.
Additional licences and certifications such as Heavy Vehicle Driver Licence, Air Conditioning Licence or relevant industry certifications will be advantageous.
