Baw Baw Shire Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Plant Mechanic to join our Infrastructure Maintenance team. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality maintenance and repair services to ensure Council’s fleet, plant and equipment remain safe, reliable and operational. Working within a dynamic workshop environment, you will carry out preventative and reactive maintenance, diagnose faults, and contribute to efficient fleet management practices. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong mechanical expertise, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement. You will also play an important role in supporting depot operations, maintaining accurate service records, and contributing to the introduction of new plant and equipment.

About the Role

This role is responsible for maintaining Council’s fleet, plant and equipment in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner to ensure the continuity of essential services. Working within the Infrastructure Maintenance team, you will plan and undertake preventative maintenance, complete repairs, and support depot operations. The role contributes to reliability of assets, compliance with safety standards, and effective workshop operations while working collaboratively with internal teams and external suppliers.

About the Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A relevant Mechanical Trade Qualification (Automotive, Heavy Vehicle or Mobile Plant preferred).
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing petrol and diesel vehicles and plant.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to problem solve and work independently.
  • Experience working in a workshop or depot environment, including maintenance recording systems.
  • Welding, fabrication and auto electrical skills.
  • A current Victorian Driver Licence.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with a positive and proactive attitude.

Desirable:

  • Heavy Rigid Licence and/or plant operation licences (e.g. forklift, loader, EWP).
  • Experience commissioning new plant and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and a commitment to workplace safety.
