About the role

As the Manager Urban Planning and Development, you will lead a dynamic team responsible for shaping the City’s urban landscape. Reporting to the Director City Development and Regulatory Services, you will oversee statutory planning and building approvals, strategic town planning projects, and the City’s land and property portfolio, ensuring alignment with the City’s long-term goals and legislative requirements. Your strategic leadership will play a key role in shaping Nedlands’ growth and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Urban Planning and Development business unit, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies and the Council Plan.
  • Develop and implement urban planning frameworks aligned with the City’s strategic objectives and Council Plan.
  • Provide expert advice to Council, administration, and external stakeholders on urban planning and building control matters.
  • Manage and mentor a team of professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration.
  • Oversee the coordination of strategic town planning projects and subdivision processes.
  • Promote a positive workplace culture, ensuring the safety and well-being of team members.

About the successful candidate

The ideal candidate will have a tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning or a related discipline, and/or demonstrate substantial experience in a similar role. Other requirements include:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of strategic town planning, building control, and the planning framework.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant legislation, including the Local Government Act 1995 and Building Act 2011.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of driving team performance and achieving strategic goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A current ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence.
  • A current National Police Certificate issued within the last three months.

What we offer

This position is a full-time maximum term contract for up to five years. A remuneration package between $164,488 and $201,114 per annum (inclusive of cash salary and superannuation) is on offer, dependent on skills and experience.
