As we continue to grow, so too does our team. We are looking for the right candidate to take on the role of Design Lead. This is a Full-Time role with flexibility to be based out of our offices in Port Macquarie or Sydney.
Position Overview
The Design Lead is responsible for taking the lead on new designs, managing the scopes to coordinate technical input from across the engineering teams and leading and coaching of the drafting team, guiding staff to achieve their full potential. They are responsible for the development of 2D and 3D drawing artefacts to support ship design and build projects, maintenance of technical documentation systems, design data management and support to Production in build-phase.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide design concepts to support tender and business development processes.
- Coordinate the technical input required from the engineering disciplines, ensuring information is collated and incorporated in the design to meet the required delivery deadlines.
- Lead the response to design iterations and updates required for existing projects.
- Implement and Govern the use of appropriate design software on assigned projects.
- Provide design and progress reports as required by project governance.
- Review and endorsement of engineering design artefacts.
- Provide leadership and coordination to the drafting team on assigned projects.
- Manage and coach the drafting team. Ensuring team performance, productivity and priorities meet project deadlines and company strategy.
- Actively seek to assist in the development of team members for their career development, fostering individual motivation and promoting a growth mindset.
- Mentoring Junior members of the drafting team and developing designers.
- Promote a collaborative environment and visible leadership within the drafting team and across all engineering disciplines setting the standard for others to follow.
- Lead the development of 2D and 3D drawings to support production activities.
- Lead the development of 2D and 3D drawings to support design development and tendering efforts.
- Maintain technical documentation systems, assist in developing standards and procedures.
- Proactively promoting quality, environmental responsibility & safety within the workplace, encouraging an outcome of Birdon being a place of work by choice.
- Actively participating in the continued growth of the business.
- Operate various 2D & 3D CAD Software
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
Essential.
- Ship building, trade, and design experience. Deep knowledge of maritime regulations, design concept and naval architecture principles.
- 5 years’ experience in leading teams for an engineering organization in a relevant industry.
- 10+ years of experience operating CAD programs such as AutoCAD, Solidworks and ShipConstructor. Proficiency in these packages is essential.
- Efficient technical drawing and drafting skills.
- Experience in developing detailed 3D models and production level 2D drawings.
- Ability to interpret technical documents, technical manuals, and drawings.
- Ability to manage data related to project documentation beyond drawings using Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, identify work priorities in a constantly changing environment.
Desirable.
- Tertiary qualifications at diploma level in a marine, production, or engineering discipline.
- 10+ years’ experience in leading teams for an engineering organization in a relevant industry.
- Experience in developing drawings for marine vessels, including working knowledge of classification society rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of marine engineering and design principles, systems, techniques, and industry standards.
- Understanding of Defence and government project documentation standards.
- Formal training in leadership, organisational change management and behaviour.
- Highly Proficient in Microsoft Office software to enable the development of presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
