The Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division is responsible for driving investment in Western Australia’s resource sector by providing comprehensive geoscience data and products, and for setting strategic resource policy. The Division also provides information and products to support the approval of mining tenements and petroleum titles and other related legislative compliance processes.
Embedded within the Geological Survey, the Land Use Planning Branch helps to shape and inform land use planning policy and outcomes for the WA resources sector. It aims to maintain access for exploration and development of the State’s mineral, basic raw material, petroleum and geothermal energy resources while assisting with the delivery of State land use objectives. This involves industry consultation, multi-commodity geological assessments and regional prospectivity studies.
The role
As a Senior Geologist in the Land Use Geoscience team, you will help shape land use outcomes across Western Australia to support a sustainable and thriving resources sector, while balancing broader State land use priorities.
In this role, you will utilise your technical and industry knowledge/experience in conjunction with good judgement, research and analytical skills, to undertake geological assessments and prospectivity analysis to inform land tenure decisions and mitigate land use conflict across the State. You will provide geoscientific advice on resources and significant mineralisation for mining lease applications, and mining compliance matters relating to mineral resources, mineral prospectivity and reported mineral exploration activities.
Your success in this role with be underpinned by your strong experience in multi-commodity mineral exploration and prospectivity analysis, along with the ability to provide professional geoscientific advice on mineral, petroleum, and geothermal energy exploration and development. Your ability work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, solve problems effectively, and navigate complex land use and planning matters relating to land and resource access will also be essential for this role.
You will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, mentor less experienced staff and provide specialist expertise across the department.
This role is suited to an experienced geoscience professional with strong analytical and communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to navigate complex land and resource access issues in a collaborative environment.

Eligibility

Substantial experience in geoscience studies related to the mineral resource industry particularly in mineral exploration and/or mineralisation studies, including experience working with geoscience databases and GIS software and demonstrated record of producing high-standard reports and maps.
