We are seeking a passionate and committed Assistant Gardener for a permanent Full-Time position.

The Role

This role is so much more than maintaining grounds and gardens. It is about connecting with the residents and clients we care for, that connection is core to what we do every day.

You will work under the guidance of our Head Gardener, helping ensure our properties, grounds and gardens are well-maintained and presented.

Some of the duties include:

  • Garden and grounds maintenance: plant cultivation, identification, pruning, weed control, turf and soil management.
  • Landscaping, mowing, whipper snipping and hedging; cleaning and maintaining water fountains.
  • Maintaining entrances, exits, courtyards and gardens to a high standard of safety and presentation.
  • Collecting and removing garden waste, branches, leaves and rubbish for clean, safe spaces.
  • Keeping outdoor furniture clean, tidy and properly arranged.
  • Interacting meaningfully with residents and clients.
  • Operating and maintaining gardening machinery and equipment safely.

About you

  • You have a passion for all things horticulture.
  • You are comfortable with manual outdoor work, including lifting, digging and transporting garden materials.
  • You take pride in your job and love the look of a pruned manicured garden.
  • You're patient and enjoy the company of Older Australians with varying needs.
  • You understand the value of sensory and lifestyle gardens.
  • You are committed to supporting residents' independence and dignity in daily life.
  • You are keen to keep learning and improving.

Requirements

  • Certificate IV in Horticulture or similar.
  • Experience working in a professional horticultural environment.
  • Willingness to learn about the needs of visitors and elderly residents that visit our gardens.
  • Horticultural knowledge, plant and herb identification skills.
  • Ability and experience in the use of lawn mowers (including ride-on), whipper snipers and hedging equipment.
  • Initiative and the ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the role.
  • Basic computer skills (Office Word & Excel).
  • Current drivers licence (Essential).
  • Current Satisfactory Police Check or NDIS Workers Screening Check (or willing to obtain one)

Hours of work and location

  • Permanent Full Time position
  • Monday to Friday from 7 am – 3 pm

Working across multiple BASSCARE sites, Canterbury, Surrey Hills, Balwyn North & Glen Iris.

Salary and Benefits

  • $31 – $34 per hour this will depend on qualifications and experience
