The Opportunity

We are building a modern, enterprise-scale data platform leveraging Microsoft Fabric to drive analytics, geospatial insights, and AI-enabled decision-making.

We are seeking a capable Data Engineer to play a foundational role in shaping and delivering Council's end-to-end data ecosystem-from ingestion and transformation to semantic models and consumption patterns.

As a Data Engineer, you will be reporting to the Head Enterprise Data and working closely with business stakeholders across Council. You will design, build and optimise modern data pipelines that transform complex data from multiple business systems into curated, high-quality and consumable data assets. This role focuses on enabling better decision-making, improving Council services, and enhancing the experience for both community and staff through reliable and accessible high-quality data.

You will lead best-practice data engineering approaches, support data modelling and governance, and ensure solutions are secure, scalable, and aligned with Council's IT & Transformation strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build and operate scalable data pipelines from source to warehouse using Microsoft Fabric and aligned with medallion architecture
  • Co-design the data governance framework, and engineering standards to govern the platform.
  • Ensure the data pipeline is secured and aligned with the adopted standards.
  • Evolve Council's current enterprise data pipeline to support multiple domains including (but not limited to) Finance, People, Procurement and Assets
  • Deliver high-quality, consumable and fit for purpose data assets for analytics, reporting or AI use cases
  • Monitor and optimise performance using tools such as V-Order, Delta Optimisation and Fabric Capacity Metrics
  • Ensure strong governance across architecture, security, cost management and platform standards
  • Be consultative with business domain expert and data analysts stakeholders to co-design the semantic data models to support data visualisation outcome.
  • Troubleshoot, resolve and continuously improve production data pipelines
  • Drive consistent engineering standards, practices and continuous improvement
  • Work closely with application SMEs, integration partners and security teams to deliver aligned data solutions

About You

You are an experienced Data Engineer with a strong technical foundation and a passion for building and delivering high-quality data solutions. You are comfortable working across complex data environments and enjoy solving challenging problems that deliver real organisational impact.

You are a collaborative and effective communicator, outcome driven, and able to work closely with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions.

You will bring

  • Demonstrated and practical experience in data engineering and integration using MS Fabric.
  • Strong expertise in bulk data integration and data processing skills specifically: SQL, PySpark.
  • Proven data modelling capability.
  • Experience with different Azure or other infrastructure cloud storage platforms.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Spark or PowerShell
  • Understanding of data integration methods (APIs, SFTP, ERP systems)
  • Experience with data visualisation tools such as Power BI, Tableau or similar
  • Knowledge of cloud identity and access management standards such as OAuth2, Entra.
  • Experience working with ERP data.
  • Experience with test-driven development.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 5+ years' experience in Data Engineering or a related field
  • Tertiary qualifications in IT, Computer Science or a relevant discipline
  • Microsoft Data certifications (e.g. DP-600, DP-700) highly desirable
