What's the role?

The Melbourne Sky News Bureau Chief leads the news coverage and operation of Sky News’ Melbourne office. Working as part of the Sky News editorial leadership team, you ensure a high standard of news coverage and planning. This role manages a variety of editorial leadership activities, including breaking news and generating original news content for Sky News broadcast and digital channels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the network's coverage in Melbourne, providing editorial direction and support for the team of reporters and camera operators
  • Plan and coordinate daily and long-term news coverage, including deployment of resources and communication with other networks for pool arrangements
  • Maintain a detailed news diary, anticipate future news needs and make editorial recommendations for coverage
  • Produce content for on air use – including writing, editing and assembling within ENPS
  • Manage staff including rostering and performance processes.
  • Sub reporter scripts and provide feedback on editorial approach
  • Support the team in generating news content that support's the company's digital strategy
  • Manage and maintain professional contacts and relations
  • Ensure content meets legal requirements and legal advice is passed on to relevant editorial staff.
  • Ensure editorial staff comply with WHS requirements during breaking news and special coverage.
  • Ensure editorial staff complete and comply with all News Corp and ANC policies.
  • Develop and maintain a relationship with other news networks (Channels 7, 9, ABC, SBS and 10) to ensure coverage of all new stories and press conferences is delivered.

Who are you?

  • At least 5 years of newsroom experience
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of Melbourne news, with a focus on politics
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to influence and direct a team
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to multitask.
  • Resilience and the ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge and experience of news production techniques and systems, with ENPS preferred
